    new bike!

just got a new bike for my 40th B-day and mother's day (which are in the same week). Took her on a "maiden voyage" yesterday. I went from a 9 year old Trek (steel) to a Specialized Ruby Pro .(all carbon fiber). . .what a difference. She is a SWEET ride! Gave up my triple chain ring for a compact so we'll see how that goes. Anyone else out there made the switch from a triple chain ring to a compact? Love to hear how that has gone for you. Also love to hear from any other Specialized Ruby owners who are out there. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms . . . keep on riding!
    Many Blessings!

Ooooh, congratulations. Happy Birthday! You gotta show us some pics.

I went from a triple to a compact double, and I had some trouble on really steep hills (like I had to walk up them ). My LBS's solution was an IRD 11-34 cassette (which I posted a link to on "May 10th rides"). It's an awsome combination. Climbing is actually fun now, and I seek out hills instead of avoiding them.

The 11-34 also worked with my existing 10 speed Ultegra derailleur (I didn't need to switch to a MTB derailleur). Shifting is smooth as silk. Very happy me!

    Good luck!

    congrats!

Just wondering, did you have to switch to the compact due to the specs of the bike, or was that something you did to save weight, or ..?

I live near Boulder, Colorado -- even DH got a triple on his road bike =)

I went from a triple to a double almost a year ago. Oddly enough, I have been a better climber because of it. I only used the granny ring a few times, so I don't miss it at all. Congrats on the bike! Jealous much!

I got my Ruby Pro last year and love it. I went from a Dolce Comp which I also loved, but the carbon Ruby is such a sweeter ride.

Needless to say the Dolce had a triple and Ruby has the compact double. So far this has not been a problem, but I will be riding in CT this weekend doing the Bloomin Metric. With those CT hills, it will be the ultimate test. I did this ride 3 years ago on the Dolce and had to resort to the granny.

I will let you know how I held up.

Pictures, pretty please?? What a wonderful way to celebrate Mother's Day.

I went to a compact from a triple and haven't missed it yet. I have some steep climbs around here (some 18% or so) and I have yet to max out the gearing.

It's interesting you like the carbon over the steel. I figured you'd have a smoother ride with steel.
