Awesome. Our carbon foot is gettin' lighter when legs go spinn' on bike.

It does, unless we all undo the good by leaving our standard non-CFL lights on throughout the house while riding

I was talking with a coworker who can't ride (she can't due to a number of reasons including disability). We agreed that small changes she easily does at home have potential to do as much or more good than my little 2 mile each way ride.

Also even if you don't commute by bike you inspire others. There's always someone thinking "she rode ___ miles this weekend, surely I can bike to the store"

You can add my 14 miles to the total also. I didn't post over there because that thread asked about long commutes, and 7 miles isn't long.

Mine is short too. 6.4, to and fro, doubled if I go home for lunch.

Mine varies on whether I must pick up the car or ride all the way home. Either 24 miles roundtrip or a whopping 40 round trip! But we don't do it daily, 2-3 times a week.

Kudos to DH who rode from the house to work this morning, he will knock down 52 miles roundtrip!

Might be worth a poll just to see total # of miles commuted by TE members on a regular basis. We should include "how often do you commute" and "how many months of the year do you commute" to be more accurate.

Don't underestimate the impact of commuters with shorter rides. We might have more of an environmental impact because there's so many more of us.

I am more motivated by the impact we have on health. Not just for my personal health but consider the "health care crisis" and "obesity epidemic" and other such buzz words. I'd guess lots of 1-3 mile commuters make a pretty good impact on health care!

My commute is 2.5 miles round trip. I commute daily and haven't missed a day in 2 years. Sadly, I am still over weight.

Well to update, after smiling cat's mileage in the link that I gave in my posting the daily on-bike work commute..goes up to 589 miles.

We do lots for carbon light feet.

Even a small ride is a good thing. It makes cycling like breathing..natural way of life.

I would not worry about the scale. I bet a lot of that weight is muscle. ____ lbs of cyclist is very different from ______ lbs of sedentary person.

My commute is 2 and a fraction each way (train does the rest), I'm a fair weather cyclist so this is Spring and Summer and usually once a week. I try to do an errand or so on the weekend, like today to the Post Office.

It's not all about # of pounds. You might have traded out some fat for muscle. You might be less overweight than you were. Even if you didn't lose an ounce of fat, your overall health has got to be better just because you can bike 2.5 miles twice daily.

Although initially I lost 20 or so pounds over the first year, I found that the fat can creep back on with just my 3.4 mile commute. I noticed it in February/March both winters, but longer and more rides in the summer burned the fat away without much effort in dieting.

Short commute here -- 2.2 miles round-trip, unless I take the scenic route (9.2 miles) or do errands on the way home (?? miles). I ride most days, that is, Monday thru Thursday, then walk to my other job on weekends (4 blocks).

I generally take the longer, hillier way home, just to get in some ride time. And I haven't lost any weight (and there is plenty here to loose).

    ***RANT ALERT***

And please, don't give me the old saw about muscle weighing more than fat. Tell that to my feet, or my computer going up hills, or my knees, or. . . oh, you get the idea. There comes a time when weight is weight is weight is weight. It doesn't matter if the weight is fat, muscle or a bag of gold when your are cranking up a steep hill. Gravity just doesn't care. /rant

    I hear your rant

I've put some of this weight back on but before I started riding I used to wear LL Bean relaxed jeans with the elastic band size 20 sometimes 22's . Then I started riding, then longer distances and did a few metrics, signed up for the AIDS ride did another ... and another .... the inches came off.

During that time especially the year I did ALC 3 even co-workers who see me daily were amazed at the transformation. If you hadn't seen me in a while that was the first thing you'd say "dayum, you're loosing weight." I donated my size 22 jeans, got 20's donated them .... 18 .... 16's .... my weight stayed almost the same.

My knees/joints are truly shot with more boo boos than I care to list. Would I like to loose weight? yes!! Would my joints be happier? Would I climb faster? He]] yes!!

Meanwhile I don't sweat it because in the words of another ALC'er when I said I really had not lost weight and she said "enjoy the bigger engine" and I did. It's fun being stronger.

Sorry for the hijack, back to your regular commute thread.
