I totally get the desire for a ring. DH and I consider ourselves married in every sense other than the strictly legal one, but we've never been through a ceremony and we don't have that piece of paper. (and yes I'm well aware of the many legal consequences of that)
After we'd been together ten years or so I really started noticing the absence of a ring on my hand, and noticing the way other people noticed it when we refer to ourselves as husband and wife (and I'm usually pretty oblivious to what other people think too
). Some time later I told him I wanted to wear a ring - he said he'd been thinking about that too - and he got me a wedding band for Christmas three years ago. I love to wear it, just as a symbol of our commitment that I wear 24/7 (except when I'm wrenching on the motorcycle or using power equipment - there are limits
)
