    I hope Raleighdon counts.

When he broke his ribs after his bike hit a rock in the road

Ick, this is scaring me! My little road rash bruise on my elbow is NOTHING compared to some of this stuff! And that was already quite painful.

he flew into that jersey barrier you see him leaning on at 20+ mph the rock was about the size of two good sized baking potatoes. He was drafting off the bike in front of him which is why he didn't see it. We still have the rock.

OUCHIE!!!!! Tell Raleighdon for me Mimi that I know how it felt! I broke five ribs mountain biking at Captitol Forest one July in 2000! I came flying down this downhill section and lost control of my bike when I hit this slushy muddy section. I flew into the air and landed on, what I thought was nice fern dead leaf forest ground. But hidden in all the over growth was a dead tree! I landed square onto it! Knocked the wind right out of me! Bad thing is we were 14 miles into a 30 mile ride. I had to ride in pain (very slowly) the remaining 16 miles. The group took off (I told them to) but dear hubby Joe remained with me. We made it to the truck and then straight to emergency room. Yep confirmed 5 broken ribs!

    HOLY MOLY
That had to been very scary not knowing what was wrong while being in that much pain!! Amazing that you were able to continue on 16 more miles!!

Oh my gosh, Mimi! That's terrible! It was a pretty nasty fall and glad it wasn't any worse. Sometimes I think I'd rather be on my mtb on dirt in case I do take a spill. Unless I fall on a tree like Sue.

It def makes you aware of how quickly even the most experienced rider can have something go terribly wrong.

There is no 'gaurantee of safety' in this sport that is for sure, (mix in a little speed.. around a few thousand pound vehicles mixed in with road debri and little tires....stuff could happen)

If you view these as stories of survival....then they may not seem so scary

(and proof that Helmets DO save your noggin!)

and I am SO impressed to hear of these people getting 'back in the saddle' true brave people!!!

(or maybe it's just my own morbid show off your bruises thrill seeker self??)

Bruises ARE internal bleeding, and yes, that blood does move around !

I also flew through the air once after losing control of my bike. I remember my brief weightlessness experience, but then gravity claimed me and I fell and cracked ribs too, but nothing like Donald or Susan. I too had to ride the remaining 10 miles back home. Donald got to go to the ER like Susan.
