HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE

George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi was going up to bed
when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed,
which she could see from the bedroom window.
George opened the back door to go turn off the light
but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked 'Is someone in your house?' and he said 'no'.

Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door
and an officer would be along when available.
George said, 'Okay,' hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

'Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed.
Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them.'
    Then he hung up.

Within five minutes, six police cars, a SWAT Team, a helicopter, two fire trucks, a paramedic
and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George, 'I thought you said that you'd shot them!'

George said, 'I thought you said there was nobody available!'

Oh Kelowna, even if this wasn't a true story I would love it.

I only hope I have the sense to respond to a situation in this way, and be clever enough to find the right words!

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
    "I will try again tomorrow".

    Okay, I'll be the grouch

It's a funny story. If it's not true, it's a really funny story.

But if it is true, what were the calls that those cops got pulled off of? Maybe just commercial burglaries, but there are a lot of violent crimes that would be lower priority than a multiple shooting. Domestic violence, for one. Rape, for another. Just about any violence where "only" one life - or none - is in danger. Never mind the fire trucks and the ambulance might have had better places to go, too.

It would be nice if police could always respond immediately to a property crime in progress. But if this story is true, the guy endangered other people to protect his property. Let's hope it's just a funny story.

ETA: Snopes analysis of the story - which sometimes isn't any more trustworthy than the rumors they purport to investigate, but anyhow there it is.

I shoulda checked Snopes first - I usually do. But then I also figured since I was putting it in the joke section, there was room for error - it was still funny.

No worries about being a grouch. You are right. But it's still a funny story.

But... (playing the devil's advocate)... if it were a true story... perhaps he actually saved his / his wife's safety/health/lives... how many times do burglars not find what they are looking for and move into the next building? Or realise they have been seen/discovered and take violent action against those who have 'rumbled' them?

Perhaps, if this scenario happened, the old guy prevented a homicide inquiry - his own...

    Just a thought...
