    climbing question

    How do you handle this?

You're on a steep hill, descending for about a half mile. At the bottom of the hill is a wall, as in, the road just ends. No way out but to climb out the way you came in, and you have to be in your small chainring to even start the climb.

When did you shift into your little chain ring?

I'd put it on after I stopped at the bottom and stood there cursing the wall and whosever idea it was for me to go down the stinking hill in the first place!

I'd shift as I was descending, assuming there wasn't any flat bit in the middle I needed to power through.

I'd shift a little before the end of the hill before stopping to start back up and also start cursing with a definate "oh crap" thrown in.

That's what BF said, too! I'll try that next time.

This is exactly what I did, down to the cursing! My initial thought was I'd have to walk back up, but I manually shifted, and rode out.
