First ride of the season

Well, it's been plenty warm here, too, but I just went for my first real ride of the season yesterday, too. We finally got our daughter into the bike trailer and we all went for an hour long ride on the bike trail, and it was great! I am a little shaky on my road bike (suddenly sharp right turns are terrifying me, no idea what that is about) but with my husband pulling the trailer I can actually keep up with him.

It was my first time on the road bike since before I got pregnant, and it was so much fun. The baby loved it, as well, so we'll be able to do that every weekend now. I'm not ready to pull the trailer myself (see: right turns, above) but it was really one of the nicest rides I've ever had ... instead of trying to keep up with my husband and getting constant comments on how I'm riding, he was taking care of the baby, and I was just going for a ride. It was almost like having time to myself!

That is so great! Glad to hear your getting out with the family. That's a nice way to travel. I am solo and want to join a bike club eventually, but have never ridden with a group before. I have been riding all my life, but can't find another rider that likes to go like I do. So, I'll have to join a club - just scared of going with a whole group.

It's pretty cold here in Maine. I grew up here and can never get used to how long the winters are. It seems they just hang right on. The summers are the most beautiful as well as the fall. I suppose it makes it all worth while.

Your'e in Sacramento? I have been thinking of transferring to Sacramento for quite a while now. I am seeing a man that lives in New Hampshire, and all is going well there. It makes me not want to go - besides the fact that Sacramento, is across the US. So far away from home. I'm truly a new England girl at heart, and always get homesick when away. When winter hits again I will be wanting to go of course.

Sacramento is great for cycling weather ... my husband once counted the number of weekends when riding was actually impossible in a given year, and it was something like seven weekends, and that is only because he won't get up and ride early in the morning so he misses the weekends when it's going to be over 95 by 11 a.m. In the winter it is really only windstorms and hard driving rains that keep people on the trainer.

We have some NE transplants in our neighborhood and they claim to like Sac because we do get a bit of fall color, and snow is close enough to visit. We also have actual seasons, they're just very mild compared to yours!

I'm gonna have to get myself there one of these days. What about the traffic when riding?

It took me a few years to get up the nerve to go riding with a bike club, but when I finally did, it was no big deal. There were people faster than I was and there were people slower than I was. Everyone was nice. I did have to get a cycling computer for my bike so I could use the cue sheets ("turn right at mile 21.3"). I don't know why I hesitated so long. Like you, I had ridden by myself for years.

It's California: there's traffic. You can get out to quiet rural roads pretty easily, and then people in big trucks and SUVs will try to kill you for the hell of it. Just like everywhere else, I think.

The downtown/midtown area is reasonably bike friendly and we have a long bike trail that is perfect for family cycling. Lots of roadies use it, too.
