Wish I had seen this forum earlier!

Been catching up on this thread and it's great how you all are supporting each other in the battle of the bulge! I've been fighting weight gain for several years now and finally have it on the run. I am 5'1" and weighed 170 pounds 2 years ago. Fought and fought, different diets, sometime exercise, sometimes not Finally, in January, weighing in at 160 pounds, I started taking spinning classes, also signed up for the Flat Belly Diet on Prevention.com and so far I am down to 149!! I want to lose 20 more pounds at least, so I need to stay motivated and keep going.

I hope you guys don't mind if I hang out on this thread and maybe I can join your next challenge!!

I just realized that I never posted on Friday!

I weighed in at 167.7. After a full week of logging all my food and exercising, I'm down a lovely 0.1 lbs. Nice.

To be fair, Friday night I was up all night getting sick...so something obviously isn't working right at the moment. I then spent the weekend NOT logging and not exercising. Ugh.

I had a very bad moment last night. I was looking at my naked body in the mirror in the bathroom right before bed and I realized that no matter how I turned or sucked or flexed...I could NOT make myself look good. Wah. When I'm this overweight, exercise sucks. It hurts when I do it and it hurts after I'm done. I've GOT to turn this around. I've never been so overweight in my entire life.

I think my plan is just going to be head down, foward motion. I know what I need to do and I'm going to force myself to do it. Screw enjoying myself or my workouts or 'feeling better'. At this point, I'm reaching critical density...I need to tough it out and get things going in the right direction.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just needed to get it out, I guess.

Catherine, why not give super low carb a try, if only to jump start things and get some semblance of control. You mentioned to me before that you did well on moderate low carb. Have you ever had your glucose tolerance measured? I wonder if you have impaired glucose tolerance like me.

For me, I combine super low carb with high protein, so that I can slowly make glucose by gluconeogenesis, as well as burn amino acids for fuel during cycling. I bring bottles with carb free protein shakes on my ride, as well as almonds. It does take your body about a week to adapt to running on a higher percentage of fat than carbs, but if you goal is to lose body fat why not give it a try. Even if you don't have impaired glucose tolerance, it will put you in a hormonal state that favors fat burning (glucagon>insulin) rather than fat storage (insulin>glucagon).

WHen you eat a lot of carbs, you secrete insulin to clear the carbs, even with normal glucose tolerance. If you have impaired glucose tolerance its even worse, cuz you'll have to be in a state where insulin>glucagon for a longer time to clear a glucose load.

Many don't realize it, but even fruit and so-called healthy starches, whole grains, etc. rapidly turn to sugar when they are metabolized, and do induce insulin secretion. If you have a very effecient glucose metabolism, this is probably not problematic, but as we age it can become less effecient, especially in those of us that put on weight.

Hey Trisk - I know I'm not glucose intolerant (or at least, not severely) but in general, I do perform better on a modified carb diet. For me, the greatest benefit is the overall reduction in cravings.

But unfortunately, that's not the reason I'm so overweight now. I'm just plain lazy. I gotta get off this self-defeating train!! I'm not one of those people who is doing everything right and just not losing (at least, not at the moment). For me, I'm not even doing it right. I've not been inspired and I've just been too preoccupied with other things to get back on track like I should have.

    Thanks though!

Sorry I didn't check in right away. I've been keeping up with my Friday weigh-in's but haven't had a chance to log on lately. I weighed in at 158.8 last Friday.

GLC, I like your honesty. When I was heavy, I found it hard to be honest about the reasons that I was not losing weight. Once I got the courage to be honest to myself, I was able to make the right choices and lost the weight.

    You'll get there!

So here I am hanging out at 149. Not sure what direction I should take. I did try WW for 6 weeks and did not lose any weight. My Dr has been messing around with my thyroid medication which I am sure does not help. I have not been sleeping well for close to 3 months. Dr changed my medication about 2 weeks ago and I am now actually sleeping again. What a relief. I am thinking about a decreasing my carb intake a bit.
