riding while on period

I have a ride tomorrow, my first with any mileage for the year which to some of you isn't much, but for me a lot, 27 miles. I have started my period (of course) and I was reading through some of the threads about what you girls do about riding on your period. I have never seen this Diva cup anywhere and don't have time to order one, however I cannot where tampons so I am wondering if I would even be able to wear this thing.

Do any of you girls ride with a pad on? Am I the only one. I was just wondering if any brands are better or more comfortable while riding?

This is the first time I will ride an organized ride in this condition so I am a little self conscious about it should I need to change my pad.
Any other time I have just riden around here 15 miles or so and come home.

Anyway, any suggestions?

I think the cycling lords would give you a pass for a pad and/or undies this time. When I didn't or couldn't wear a tampon, I personally never had much luck sticking a pad to the chamois, so I would wear undies. It's not the most comfortable thing, but it's not the worst, either. Do you see my panty lines??? Tuff! Ask me if I care...I don't.
I would recommend bringing extras and changing at rest stops as they'll get sweaty (yuck). There should be bathroom facilities available -- port-a-johns at least.

I read an excerpt out of a women's cycling book and it addressed this issue. One of the riders interviewed was a pro who just bleeds into her chamois. I suppose that would work. It'd probably be a little messy, though.

I ride with pads and haven't had a problem, but yes, it does get a bit uncomfortable. Naturally, my "friend" had to come on the day I attempted my first metric last year Nothing like struggling up a hill while cramping

I do that, but I have VERY LIGHT periods, and I am tempted to assume that female pro cyclists also do for most of them (very low body fat and high exercise load often leads to little or no period). If one's periods require her to change tampons/pads every 3 hours or so, I'm not sure how well it would work. But I'm thankful I haven't had that situation in years...

I have stuck a pad to the chamois (on a ride about that long) and it worked pretty well. I don't really bleed that much when I'm exerting myself. I went home without going to lunch right after, though!

I've noticed that since I've started eating more organic and using dairy with out the rBGH (I can't remember the order of the letter and I'm too lazy to get up and look at my milk carton ), I'm having shorter and lighter periods. :-)

They are Louis Garneau knickers with a medium weight chamois. I got them about a year and a half ago from TE! I don't think they are made exactly like that anymore, at least not with the blue line down the front. I like all SheBeest and Louis Garneau cycling bottoms. I usually wear knickers right up until the temps are in the 90's- then I'll switch to longish shorts.

Since I have been past that stage of my life for the past few years I very happily no longer have that problem, however, when I did have it I wore a pad without any problem. I also brought and extra if I were going on a longer ride.

Hi all. I really mean no disrespect, but I know we're all a bit tetchy about this subject. Please believe me when I say I am just trying to be helpful.

Basically, I have such trouble with my periods I have been on some kind of hormone-based birth control most of my reproductive live, with only 2 long-term breaks. That's from age 15, to now (age 46) and continuing to menopause if possible. One side effect of this type of birth control that is downplayed by most doctors, is, if you can find one that works for you your period will become very light, or stop altogether if you are lucky.

As an aside, I found myself shouting at Dr Laura Shovelhead when a male caller asked about birth control pills for his daughter-the girl had painful menstruation and her physician recommended birth control pills for this condition, and Dr Laura vetoed this because teenagers shouldn't take birth control! What crap.

Let me help with the thread drift:
Obviously Dr. Laura didn't go through the pain and 10 day flow when SHE was a teenager. She sounds like my mom did, even though I never got sick or complained otherwise, I was curled up with a heating pad for days. Those pills changed my life when I was old enough to get them myself!

I don't think people understand that birth control isn't birth control so much as it is hormonal therapy/regulation. Even though it's prescribed like candy and listed as the etiology for practically every gynecological disease known to man, it is necessary for the treatment of various gynecological issues because of its ability to regulate.

Of course, most Americans are highly ignorant of their health care because we're taught by pharmaceutical companies via advertisements. It's sad, because we're harming ourselves. Dr. Laura is obviously in this group of people. Brave New World.

I think if people, like Dr Laura, started treating "birth control" as it really is, a drug like any other drug the doctor may prescribe, then people would start realizing the importance of taking this drug and would understand that yes, it is a highly effective drug used to treat many ailments.
