Could be lack of hydration.....or over hydration. Check weight immediately before commencing exercise AND immediately following. Any change can be attributed to hydration changes. Also could reflect a decreased level of blood calcium or magnesium, both easy to have checked.

This is a common topic, because it's a common problem. Hydration, electrolytes, and calcium are (I think) the most common recommendations. I was almost crippled by these issues when I first started riding, and I'd wake up in the middle night in pain.
Calcium was my answer, I take calcium every night now and I'll take another tab right before any long ride. Cured.

I'll add magnesium and Vit C to that list.

Members in my bike club told me they take a TUMS before every ride because it contains calcium and helps prevents the cramps.

I take the usual 1200mil a day as directed by my dr. anyway, but still get cramps every once in a while. It is a lot better than it was a few years ago. I also try to drink a Vitamin Water after every ride. I have no idea if it helps but I figure it couldn't hurt.
