Is Clinger polynesian, or did he only do a little culture-borrow?

I don't know why Clinger has those facial tats, but it just makes me sad. Such a scary distracting look which probably makes it hard for people to look at him and connect in the most basic human way. Carol

    ahem

Tokie-May I suggest visiting NZ..there are quite a few folks who have facial tatts like that..NOt all of them are good ..(Gang members from the Mongrel Mob..)

Tis not just a fad in some countries.. Tis not hard to look at someone with that type of tattoo. Would you find it hard to do a traditional maori greeting at a marae with a person who had one?

I have known several people with facial tatts or ritual scarification on the face. It is very difficult at first to not be distracted by it because we are not used to it in our culture. But I found that I got used to it pretty quickly and then it was no different, for me anyway, than looking at anyone else. I still connect with the eyes, facial expression etc.

I think you are on to something. Of course people in cultures where this is somewhat the norm don't see them as anything but what they are.
But this is the United States. my interpretation of it is that it's his mask; a defense mechanism of sorts to keep people from getting too close in an emotional way.

I think the moustaches are hilarious. Aesthetically, Cozza's looks better than Z's because it's darker.

I managed to snag both Dave Z. and David Clinger at ToC on Saturday.
