    Corn = Bloating ???

    To disable ads, please log-in.

hmm was sure if this should go under nutrition or health but since I don't feel particularly sick I though I would post here...
I seem to notice a trend with bloating and eating corn- I don't eat much corn but I know that many products have a " corn" base - it became very apparant to me when I ate some popcorn the other day- I don't eat it often but the next day after my indulgence my tummy was HUGE!
Has anyone else noticed this? Perhaps just a sensitivity? Simple answer is to avoid corn and corn porducts but just curious if anyone has experienced this.

Corn is hard on my stomach, too. I just assume it's because it's hard (or impossible) do digest. I eat it sparingly and only when my digestive system is, um, moving well.

Pika - corn is one of the things that can cause bloating for me, too. But I must say that my treatments with you, my NP, and my MT have all but resolved the issue!

Your popcorn may have had something on it that you reacted to, also, either on its own or in combination with the corn. Of course you know that the way to be sure if corn is the culprit is to completely eliminate it from your diet, then gradually introduce it - starting with its purest forms.

Oh, apparently we need to eat lime at the same time as corn in order to digest the corn. If someone comes up with a tasty lime popcorn concoction, let me know!

Unfortunately that's the mineral lime and not the fruit... Pasole, aka Pazole, aka hominy (corn soaked in an alkaline, usually lime solution) is pretty tasty though...

Yep...corn can be hard, for some, to digest. Tasty, but bloating and a "quick pass" through the system.

Just a thing to note...if you discover that corn and your system aren't compatible, also realize that maltodextrin in the US is often made from corn. Maltodextrin is an ingredient in most energy gels and drinks. I've heard of people who have corn intolerance, having no problems with maltodextrin products, but not me. Now I'm a Clif groupie--rice, not corn.

Haven't heard of corn nor have experienced it.

I tend to notice things that give me flautulence...temporary bloating is the least of my concerns.

Too much milky lattes give me both flautulence and bloating. I learned that just at Christmas..on the bus for 5 hrs.

Ahhh, welcome to the world of the lactose intolerant! If it's mild, you can still have yogurt, and try to mix chocolate with milk to make it more digestable (I KNOW! Chocolate as a cure!!!)

I love corn on the cob, but know that I don't come close to digesting it. Do the calories really count when you don't really digest it?

Yeah - I always wonder about that too! It only seems fair that if it blasts through unpleasantly, it should not also make me fatter!!!

    Thanks...

Good tip about the energy bars/gels etc Thorn- I tend to use cliff products as well I seem to prefer them- maybe that is why.
I had to google Pazole- I had never heard of that dish before...and here I thought I was a pretty experienced eater
    Thanks again
