I hated our coach for making us do another 600... then it was only 100 to go :-) & felt a bit woozy afterwards.

I need a kick in the butt to give me courage to go the masters program tonight. I am not too tired. I really need to go. But I'm as nervous as a kid entering kindergarten.

That aside, I was looking at the swimplan website CWR mentioned and here is a sample of one based on my particular abilities. What do you think?

I don't actually understand it all at this point, and I don't know how to remember it all once you're in the water since you can't exactly take it with you....

    Duration 30-45 mins
    Distance 900yd
    Pool length 25yd

    Issued Feb 3 2008

    Warm up

    • 2 x 50yd Any Stroke (even pace), rest 0:15 / 50yd
Swim your choice of stroke at a steady pace.

    Build up (repeat 3 times)

    • 1 x 50yd Freestyle Kick with fins (25yd Easy, 25yd Effort), rest 0:15 / 50yd Freestyle kicking with fins, alternating every 25yd between easy and fast kicks. Use the easy kicks for recovery.

    • 1 x 50yd Freestyle Breathe and Kick with fins, rest 0:15 / 50yd Freestyle drill to isolate the breathing action and practice control of the body and head position. One arm holding the back of the kickboard, the other arm loosely at your side. Keep your ear on your shoulder while kicking. Roll your body to breathe on the side not holding the kickboard.

    Core (repeat 2 times)

    • 2 x 100yd Freestyle (25yd Easy, 25yd Effort), rest 0:30 / 100yd Freestyle swim at a slow, relaxed pace for 25yd, followed by Freestyle at a fast pace for 25yd. Recover during the easy part of the swim.

    • Rest 0:60 seconds

    Warm down

    • 1 x 100yd Freestyle Push & Glide, rest 0:20 / 100yd
Freestyle swim, pausing at the end of every stroke with arms out-stretched, one held out front, the other held loosely against the body.

    52 minutes
    2952.76 yards
    01m 46s /100 yards

Got to the pool at 5:45 AM. No one was swimming and only 1 of the coaches was there with 2 other guys who swim at 6.

Apparently they shut down the Lifetime Fitness Pool when it's lightening outside.

Luckily the bad weather was done and the pool opened up at 6:00 AM. The coach who gives the workouts wasn't there though.

No problem for me! I just pulled one of my many workouts from my bag, and did that.

Actually, it was really nice. I finally got a longer set in. I also got to do some distance.

    200-Warmup

    600- 200 easy/200 fast/200 moderate

    200- Easy
    200- Fast
    200- Easy

    100- IM
    100- IM
    200- Fast
    200- Easy

600- Paced it from slow to fast at the end.

    100- cool down.

Sounds hard to me! I MIGHT be able to do it if I didn't stop swimming and I swam faster than usual. Still so... not sure I could that.

KSH and CC - Alpine didn't specify how long it took her to swim 4000 m. Kimmy and I were talking about the postal 1 hour swim earlier and that may have cuased some confusion. But really, for all I know she could have done it in an hour, I just don't think she specified.

Alpine - care to comment? Inquiring minds want to know.

AH... yea, we might have gotten confused on that one.

I know I swam 3,000 yards in 52 minutes myself today... that is with a 1:45, 100. To make 4,000 yards in one hour... I can't even think how fast someone would have to swim.

Then again, a lot of people make their IM swim (4200 yards) in around 1 hour.

OH. Good evening ladies. I was caught in the time zone dimensional shift that is called a "working day in Europe".

Our practice is one hour and 50 minutes. Sound more realistic?

Our coach, however does 3.8K in 50 minutes, Ironman relay team mode. He's an ex-competitive swimmer. So it's feasible. First out of water at Ironman is what, 40 something minutes....

I sounds more realistic in the sense of how much time it took to swim 4000m, but, for me, the idea of swimming for 1 hour and 50 minutes is not realistic at all!

I know I'm not regular in here because I really don't deserve to be but I swam 1650 yards today Was going to do 1600 but I was using the alphabet to count laps and I wanted to end on "g" instead of "f" so there you have it. I tried to swim easy and just work on form though the last lap I tried to go fast. I ended up being tired after that one!

It took me about 45 minutes or so which is slow, granted. All I'm worried about right now is building up endurance. I feel good about it!

Well, after all the hemming and hawing and even trying it out, I decided not to join the Masters after all. The M,W 8:30-9:30pm time is tough for me and I just wasn't sure it would work out. I am pretty disciplined so I decided to follow the plans from the Swimplan website for awhile an then take another lesson or two to touch base with a coach in a month. This way, I can go at my own speed, work on whatever I want to. Although I enjoyed the masters night and can definitely see the benefits, I also realized that they are far too busy to give me much, if any, one on one coaching. Not once did anyone correct my stroke, which is the main reason I want to go. If no one is going to correct me, I may as well swim on my own.

So today, I basically followed this plan. The ~ are extras I did on my own.

    45-50 minutes, 1300m

    Warm up
    ~ 4 X 25m kickboard
    • 4 x 25m Any Stroke (even pace), rest 0:10 / 25m

    Build up (repeat 4 times)
    • 1 x 25m Single Arm (arm out front) 6 x left, 6 x right, 6 x full stroke, rest 0:10 / 25m
    • 1 x 25m Freestyle Catch Up, rest 0:10 / 25m

    Core
    • 4 x 50m Freestyle Swim, leave on 01:45 / 50m
    • 4 x 50m Freestyle Swim, leave on 01:40 / 50m
    • 4 x 50m Freestyle Swim, leave on 01:35 / 50m

    Warm down
    • 2 x 50m Freestyle Push & Glide, rest 0:15 / 50m

Then because I still had time:
    ~ 2 x 25m breast stroke (maybe 4, can't remember)
    ~ 2 X 25m backstroke
    ~ 4 X 25m freestyle
