Hmmm.. I see. I can't quite imagine having to ride my bike without proper bike shorts. My butt will be so sad. But at the same time, I can't imagine my padded shorts in a wetsuit under water. They'd be like a diaper when I got out right?

kg, my tri shorts are amazingly comfortable. Granted, there isn't much by way of padding but they dry. Almost If you get a pair of tri shorts, go out riding in them to see how it is. Also remember that if you're doing a sprint tri, the bike portion is only 12 miles. It isn't that bad. Even if it DID hurt (and mine, at least, didn't), you will have nervous energy, you will be trying to dry off, and you won't feel a thing.

I'm finding I'm more comfortable in pad-less shorts or my old fashioned chamois than the new "3-D" chamois.

Tri shorts have nice minimal padding, so I want to see how they feel; both for racing and for general riding.

Wet-diaper effect: that's why I swam in plain compression shorts (underwear, really) and then put nice dry bike short/skort on after I got out of the water. The UnderArmour shorts dried very quickly (so did the CWX bra) and by the time I got about a mile down the road I was really comfortable.

I'm shopping around for shorts right now and have been considering tri shorts for short (25mile) training rides...

I have worn my tri shorts for anything up to 50 miles and been okay. They are perfectly suitable for a regular 20-something mile training ride.

I wear tri shorts for my 112 mile rides. I actually like them better than thick chamois shorts.

I just tried to place a huge order with TE, but something's not right with the system and I can't. It wants a password I don't remember setting up, and it won't send me the password it says I set up.

And the "guest" option seems to be gone, so I'm S.O.L.!

    I can't believe I can't buy anything! I'm traumatized!

third time was a charm, I got to place my order. And to celebrate my successful TE plunder, my credit card insisted I buy some stuff from Ibex.

I don't understand, I give the credit card plenty of exercise, why does it insist on ravaging the internet, too?

You will NOT want to wear a real pair of biking shorts under your wetsuit. Get some tri shorts. Well worth the investment. I also love doing my long runs in them as well. No messing with panties going up my booty.

As for your butt hurting... you gotta look at it in the scope of things. If you are doing a sprint, it's only maybe an hour on the bike. A little butt hurt after an hour on the bike isn't that much suffering.

I was surprised though, as I rode my HIM (57 miles) in my tri shorts and my butt didn't hurt at all. I had throughly broken it in on the saddle by the time the race came around.

Now, keep in mind that I am SENSITIVE... right now since I'm breaking my butt back in on the saddle, after my 3 hour rides I can't even put on underwear when it's all said and done. Yes, I put on body glide and I reapply... I put on chamois butter... and I still get raw and red by the end (same shorts as always, even got new ones... same saddle). That will go away once I build up my tolerance again though.

Dang... what was the topic again?

OH.. yea... the Rapida Tri Tops by Desoto... ROCK! They are high on the neck and low on the waist. Goes to my hips. I love covering my belly in a race!

I love my tri shorts. Even though they have little padding, it seems to be enough to keep me comfortable. I would recommend them too. And, I have only done one tri so I mostly wear mine for either running or just biking.

I didn't realize this was a shopping thread. When do those checks come from Bush? Boo-hoo, I want to buy some cool tri-wear too.

If you look back a bit in history a chamois was never really intended to be padding... it was just as it sounds, a piece of chamios leather. It was more intended to provide a soft, seamless area so that you weren't being rubbed. Some of the new fat, padded chamios that are put in shorts these days can be just as bad as a fat over stuffed, squashy saddle... and as we all know minimal saddles are not necessarily uncomfortable, while padded ones aren't necessarily good. Same thing can go for shorts. A well designed minimal chamois can be a lot more comfortable than a big old diaper like pad.

I'm a big fan of Zoot's stuff. I find their "bit of fleece" chammy very comfortable when you're down in the aero position. I tend to get "forward pressure" with the heavier chammy regular bike shorts.

    2XU on sale: http://www.trisports.com/compclothing.html#top

I wanna know why men seem to have nicer tops, and theirs are cheaper than women's. (ok, so maybe the internal shelf bra is worth something extra, but still...)
