    Just joined today...

    Real name: Ann

Where do you live? Oakland, CA

Explanation of your handle: Well, the word biker and one of my initials - not very interesting, is it?

Explanation of your avatar: nothing yet...

Age (general or specific): Started my 40s last July

    Occupation: Programmer, self-employed

Favorite bike: mine - a Specialized Sequoia Elite (I think that's what it is)

What's in your stable? Umm, just the one bike.

Fastest speed on a road bike? 29 mph (alright, I'm a chicken, and all too aware that, when you're on a bike, all the soft parts are on the OUTSIDE!)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Oh, it will be a long while before there's photographic evidence of me in cycling clothes! Let's get another 50 lbs off first (one mile at a time!)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No comment!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I've found that any moment ON the bike is better than the moments coming OFF the bike (why does it seem to take so LONG to tip over with both feet still clipped in?)

    Occupation:

Favorite bike: I only have two bikes....so I really can't say that I favor one over the other.

What's in your stable? Specialized Rockhopper Comp and Cervelo Soloist Team. I hope to purchase 2 more bikes...

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? ~45mph last year at the Ripon Triathlon

Another picture of yourself or your ride?
2005 Iola Bump-n-Jump....1st WORS race of the year....

    I have no interesting lies.....

Most memorable moment on my bike:
Biking through bottom bracket deep water at the bottom of a ski jump....getting stuck, not being able to unclip in time and getting thoroughly soaked from head to toe because I fell.....

Most fun ever had on a bike?
    Every time I ride...

Welcome to TE R.B. from another Badger-ette

I live in the Stevens Point area and with four dogs (five counting #2's dog who comes to 'cocker day care' I share your affection for cycling and dogs.

I'm sure the other TE'ers who enjoy mtn biking (like the Iola Bump & Jump) will enjoy hearing about some of the great mtn events here in WI. Do you participate in 24-hours at Nine Mile???

Looking forward to reading your posts!

OK... better say hi to you new folks (or old lurkers!!! )

bikerINco... was sure I had said hi to you earrlier Jody, cause I remember thinking how cool it must be to live on a steamboat ... and then I realised you meant a place called Steamboat... the USA has such cool names for some of the towns.

runnergirl... congrats on your graduation... I teach on a degree level programme, and I know how excited each group of students get when they are in their final year. Way to go - and excellent to hear you are continuing with study!

julbee... welcome Julie... thanks for sharing some great rides in your intro - look forward to seeing more of you.

FreshNewbie... I know I've chatted with you in other posts but here's an official "welcome" - glad you are enjoying the boards

weathergal... LOL, when I read your comment about going uphill, well, I can relate - I really struggle on hills. Working hard on it hough.

Dianyla... I love IT too - its not my job, but I love messing around with it all. Hey, you know much about LINUX? We're contemplating building a PC (well, letting the older kids do the building with some supervision from us) and set it up as a LINUX only PC. Anyways, welcome, and hope you like it here

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
    "I will try again tomorrow".

Welcome to the board Diane. I loved your comment about your first post - criminy I remember the first time I posted here I must've read my posting a hundred times Just to be there were no typos and it made sense and the question didn't sound stupid. The first time I posted and found a mistake I looked like this ! and man can I relate to your loaner, hand-me-downs - right now I'm riding a 1987 Peugeot I bought off a guy cheap and a 1989 Trek 1100 coz it was only a 50 cm frame and I was the shortest person he knew! ROFL........(although I do own 2 new bikes that I bought so not ALL of mine are everhereafters! )
Hope to hear more from ya soon!

    welcome bikerz, madisongrrl and cyclegiant3

as for bikerz question "why does it seem to take so LONG to tip over with both feet still clipped in?"

that's easy, it's the "toppler effect" similar to the doppler effect. You know how the siren's pitch changes as it moves towards, then away from you? "toppler effect" is that speed slows down when you're falling clipped in.

    toppler effect

Toppler effect - I LOVE it! It's so true - my buddy I was riding with the last time I fell (as she dropped her bike and ran to help untangle me from mine, while I lay at the botton of a gravel-filled ditch) said "That happened so fast!", but it seemed to me to take about half an hour from when I realized I was heading over until I was actually on the ground. Luckily, blood and scars notwithstandiong, all my falls have been from completely stationary positions - embarrasing, but not terribly serious in the long run. And I did feel pretty studly riding the 14 miles back to the car after the last and bloodiest fall! Everyone told me you fall 3 times in your clips before you really get it - me and my knees and hips really hope that's true! I now unclip BOTH feet every time there's even a hint of the need to slow down... I and I don't clip in until I am well under way from a start.

Trek420 - good luck on the up-coming Lifecycle - I have several friends riding and crewing this year - have a great ride - it's an amazing achievement to even sign up and train, much less complete it year after year.
