I was on the train and thinking "a folding bike would be so easy to do." THen contemplating the "excess consumption" aspect of that thought, and then realizing that the radical change in lifestyle when you de-emphasize the auto (I'm between cars) means that in any given year or two, you save enough money to buy an entire bicycle to add to the fleet if that is what you choose to do, but more importantly, that having more bikes in the fleet makes it possible to do things like... sell the car. SO, if having the extra bike means you'll ride when you'd have driven, it can pay its freight.
