The ER doc suggested that it could be not what I ate, but what my food ate, so we may never know.

Hmmm, good point, although in my case the food was lacto-vegetarian and I'm not aware of anything of that nature being in milk. But there sure have been a lot of red tide outbreaks lately, and if there was someone less than scrupulous along the seafood chain of custody, that definitely could be your culprit.
