Gunnar?

This is on craigslist locally for 425.00
I can't find Gunnar geometry...similiar to waterford? edit: just found it...may be too big...my inseam is bout 30" and the So on this is about 30...

what do you think?



Gunnar Crosshairs 50cm semi-compact frame set. Top tube is a little longer than most 50cm bikes. The frame is hand-made in Waterford Wisconsin out of oversized OX platinum steel and is painted light green over silver. It looks super sharp. It is light enough to race but has braze-ons for fenders and a rack to be versatile as well. These are very popular for touring bikes as well. This one has been my pit bike for the last year and a half and has been raced a handful of times. Consequently there are a few paint chips and a couple of small scratches but the bike is still in very good condition overall.

i have just recently bought a gunnar frameset on ebay for 300 for just the frame. i got a fork for about 80, and a headset for about 40 (of course add shipping to all of that). the frame i got is (i would say) a 9 out of 10.

so this price seems a bit high. i can't tell you whether or not I like my gunnar yet (as it's still in pieces) but i've heard great things... the only other concern is that it fits you. since you can't test ride it to see if you like the geometry you might want to see if you can find a gunnar in that size somewhere in your area built up.. or find a different bike with identical geometry (although I doubt that that is a great way to test..)

He actually is down to $425.00...so it's about the same price....
But I think a 50cm in that model might be too big...not even enough standover.

My new "new bike" (as opposed to an older well loved Riv) obession is the salsa casseroll. I rolled one back and forth (I guess that counts as fondling...) on the floor..it's a beautiful color and very sleek.

I think new those are around 1500....does anyone know for sure?

I have the Roadie in a 50 and I have a 30" inseam.

However, the Crosshairs has a much taller standover than the Roadie (760 vs 709...wow! big difference!) and the "theoretical" top tube on the Crosshairs is about 1 inch more. It sure is purty, though!

I'd pay $425 for it, but it sounds like your hunch that it's really just too big is probably correct. I NEVER see Gunnars on Craigslist here! Wah!

The guy just wrote me and said he can throw on some tires and I can try it...he also said he was a little suspicous of the chart..he has a 30 inseam and it fit him with room to spare...

Here's a comparison of some specs....do you see anything really glaring I should feel for? I used the Globe specs of the non step through that fit me a wee bit better than the 53cm step through that I bought.

Depending on what you want to build up the Gunnar with, it could end up costing you as much as the Casaroll anyway.

A new Gunnar frame looks like about $750, and if the one you found for $450 doesn't quite fit... well, it'd be worth it to spend the extra to buy a new one that DOES fit.

By the time you get all the parts and pieces, and then pay a mechanic to put it all together, that extra $300 investment in a good fitting frame is a pretty minor price for happiness!

And that fabulous Waterford quality will last and last.

oh crap. I have a 31, maybe 31.5", inseam and got a 54.. why didn't i notice the standover spec when i was shopping?!?!?

phew! i just had a very happy lbs experience. This was my 2nd time at this particular shop but first time doing more than browsing. This is not a chain but a local guy who's been there a while, etc. Turns out he is (in addition to being knowledgeable) super friendly... something that I have not always found at LBSs around here. (if you live in madison, you know who I'm talking about!) anyway, he seemed to think that this bike would fit me and even had a guess at which stem to start with (acknowledging that i will probably need to play around with length and angle). once he gets my headset, fork, bottom bracket and crank in, my DH can start to install the easy stuff... and maybe I will have a whole bike this weekend!
