I was thinking about the 30-40% depreciation while I was making lunch.
I think if I were looking at that bike priced just 10 or 20% below retail for a new similar bike, the 10-20% would be worth it to me to get brand new. Upgrades aside, of course. But for 30-40% off, I'd buy the older one. This happened when I was looking at Elements. There were very few used ones, but the ones that were around were just 1-2K less than brand new. I bought brand new, of course.
If one of those used ones had had upgrades that I knew I wanted and planned on doing to the new one anyway, I might have bought used, despite the miles. If they had had upgrades that I had no appreciation for (upgraded wheels might not mean much to some people), then I'd probably go with the new.
The other thing to consider is the goal. Are you trying to make a killing, or trying to get a fair price for something you don't want to own anymore?
