I was told a few weeks ago that my building would be getting bike racks, that it was only a matter of figuring out where to put them. Today my coworker heard from the building manager that they are only beginning to figure it all out. So, I sent the mgr an email suggesting the possibilities, starting with a storage room indoors, bike lockers, down to unprotected bike racks. I also acknowledge that space is a problem but suggested that they could use one of the spaces that are semi-obstructed by lightposts since they are undesirable spaces for cars, especially the one right behind the guard shack.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to handle the management so that they see the need and utility of bike racks?

well. first of all, i have seen field of dreams.

now onto management and bike racks. What really did it for our management is that it is a "fire safety hazard" to have unsecured bikes in stairwells and hallways. (they might fall down and trip people!)
Once you say "safety hazard" they just go nuts. Depending on your company, the gov't gives them brownie points for bike commuting programs, so they WANT you to ride your bike.
and then it becomes more important to find a place to put the bike.
If your building has parking for cars, you might mention to Management that you can park 6 bikes in the area that one car takes up.... or... if 6 people are biking, look how much more room there is for their cars!


The hardest part for us was finding real estate in the bldg that someone didn't have dibs on! we finally found a few spots that were owned by Facilities, not some other org. and there were squatters filling the spaces. Any unused space will get taken over - By custodians, by forklift drivers (parking) and by that guy in your building who always has more stuff than he knows what to do with.

So we finally got all the squatters out, and the area was empty, ready for construction of the bike racks, and over night, someone came along and filled it with some stuff that needed to go into storage. But once you have facilities on your side, it gets easier.

And today, 4 bikes including mine were in our new bike rack.
