As long as your hanging straps aren't stretchy, then swinging isn't a problem. You can pedal the bike and shift and adjust gears. You may prefer the greater stability and adjustability of a repair stand, but hanging the bike is very functional. When I worked in a shop in 1973, this is how we did all our repairs.
Oil is good, grease is better.
