If you have an unfinished basement, you can easily make your own work stand or store bikes off the ground for minimal cost. Here's an example of how I work on bikes. Lots of storage options if you don't mind drilling anchors in your garage. A trip to www.homedepot.com under storage/garage turned up almost a dozen cheap $7-50 options, from simple hooks to lifts.

I have a tiny little garage on my property that I originally intended to use for my Beetle*. But, it got invaded by bikes (six now, since I gave the matched-set Buicks to my son and his girlfriend). So I took the old paper type paneling off the ceiling of the garage, hung some rafter hooks up there and all the bikes hang from the rear wheel. We have a repair stand from Nashbar and my hubby built me a fine work bench with pegboard. (That all was my xmas present last year.)
*The Beetle got swept up by a street sweeper and the Element doesn't fit in the garage, so I have a bike garage instead!
I think a repair stand is necessary if you do your own work. Or you can be one with your bike, like Deb.

We have a Park folding stand. Nice thing to have around.

Deb, On yours is the bike swinging a problem? Say when you want to twirl the pedals and shift???

As long as your hanging straps aren't stretchy, then swinging isn't a problem. You can pedal the bike and shift and adjust gears. You may prefer the greater stability and adjustability of a repair stand, but hanging the bike is very functional. When I worked in a shop in 1973, this is how we did all our repairs.

Repair stands
Looks to me like Debs' idea is a great one, especially if you are concerned about space.Like some of the others, I do own a stand and use a Park foldable stand. Since I make my living at this, I feel as though I need things to be easier and functional. The Park stands are great products and have a great warranty. I have had other brands, but never seemed to have a whole lot of luck with them... of course mine gets used much more often and I'm probably harder on it as well. IT definitely motivated me to keep my bike a bit cleaner as well
