I seriously, truly, totally recommend signing up to www.vorb.org.nz - the number one cycling website in NZ. If you make a post saying you're visiting, there's a huge riding contingent in Welly, and some in Chch, and a few in Queeny that will be able to give you heaps of advice, and perhaps even take you out for a spin. In particular, there's a large MTBing crew of women in Welly that I'm sure would be glad to show you around the local trails (they did when I was up there! mmmm welly singletrack.)
