Biker fails to notice missing leg
Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:52AM EDT
TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for more than a mile, leaving a friend to pick up the missing limb.
The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, on Monday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.
He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.
The man and his leg were taken to a hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

We have bee discussing this on another board that I belong to. Isn't that crazy. I actually ride/race sportbikes as another extra hobby when I have time. Here is a picture of my latest race bike.

Is it wrong of me to wonder if he noticed at the next stop because he went to put his foot down and..........
fell over?

I remember something similar in Nashville about 20 years ago. Late night wreck on the interstate where a teenage girl sideswiped a truck while her arm was resting on the door (with the window down).
She drove a mile before she looked down and noticed that her arm was gone. In her case, it was reported that she felt no pain, but immediately went into shock when she saw what happened.

Much thanks to batsheva and Bad JuJu. I just love being on anything with two wheels. My philosophy is "two wheels are better than four."I have to admit that I don't do much street riding anymore though. Cagers are so unaware of their surroundings that it scares the crap out of me. Plus the streets are A LOT more dangerous than riding on a closed circuit race track. I was rear-ended by a drunk driver at 4:30 in the afternoon on a WEDNESDAY about three years ago. I was lucky to come out with minor injuries ... after that I decided to stay off the streets for the most part.

this has turned into a most bizarre thread, half are commiserating with the idea of losing a limb; the other half are in total denial about it and are in an orgy over the beauty of motorcycles.
!!!!
Sorry ...... Us motorcyclists can be just as passionate about motorcycles as bicycles. When I get a chance to talk about either I glow with excitement. Just so you know, I also flood my motorcycle forum with bicycle talk. As a matter of fact, I've now turned 7 of my fellow motorcycle riders into bicyclists as well. 2 are doing great in triathlons now and another is well on his way to greatness. I just love bicycles and motorcycles ... what can I say?

On the story - yikes. That just shows how much of pain recognition is mental.
