    You know, I'm always out there scouting for inspirational cycling books, but given that long distance cycling is so much about the mental game, I find any endurance stories/books inspirational.

    try this one:
    Two Wheels North: Bicycling the West Coast in 1909 by Evelyn McDaniels Gibb

    it's about a couple of boys who decide to ride from California to the Seattle World's fair in 1909. I believe the granddaughter of one of them pieced together the stories, journals and postcards to make this book.
