When I was a kid, we would make ramps out of sheets of plywood and paint cans, or 5-gallon buckets filled with rocks and sand. No helmets. It's amazing that no one died or was paralyzed. Plenty of road rash, though. Heh.

Only they used to use plywood, 2x4's and 55 gallon drums.
By the time I was 7, I could clear a 3ft ramp. Of course, then there were the times we would wheelie on the seawall to see who would fall in first.
Yes, I wear a helmet now and am a very careful rider, but I do wonder if it's a little late after the fact in relation to how much more brain damage I could sustain with so few cells left. (My Mom was well known and rightfully pitied by all at the local ER.)
