Question Questions about a Trek 1000

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I would like opinions on this bike. I'm a newbie beginner rider. I have the opportunity to get a Trek 1000 used at a very good price ($400 or less). It is a 2004 and supposedly has only been ridden once. It is in mint condition and is the correct frame size (52) for me.

I have a Giant Cypress DX hybrid and have been wanting a road bike, but an expensive bike is not in the budget right now. This opportunity popped up and I am considering it and wanted opinions.

Another question ~ can the Trek 1000 handle a little wider tire than what comes on it?

    Thank you for your input!

I'm unable to comment on price (check completed auctions on ebay for that) or wheel changes, but it's a very good bike. This is what Silver started on before she went carbon...and she still rides it often.

I have a 2006 Trek 1000 WSD that I purchased in February. I am very happy with it. Everything works great, it's getting me everywhere I want to go, and it's nice and fast! I do think I'll want to upgrade at some point in the future, but for now, I really have no complaints.

I don't know whether or not you could use wider tires. I don't see why not. As long as the brakes could be adjusted to accommodate the width, it seems like a wider tire should fit. I'm sure your LBS could tell you for sure.

Under $400 sounds like a great price to me. I paid nearly $700 for mine, but it was new. If you buy it, be sure to post pictures

On average, your road bike should easily be able to accommodate a 700X28 tire. I've seen some style tires that are a skinny 700X32 work.

I get to check it out tomorrow. I'm excited. For what it's worth, it also comes with an opened, but never put on cyclocomputer. along with a saddlebag, and spare tire.

I don't really need any of that, but I won't complain.

Geoff (my BF and LBS manager that sells Trek) says that you can do up to 700x28. Any wider and there won't be enough frame and fork clearance not to mention you'd have to deflate and reinflate the tire to take it off and put it back on.

Go for it! I love my 1000!

Yep, with all those extras, that's a heck of a deal (and it's really sounding like it wasn't riden much!

After our local tri last year, we were talking to someone we knew who got her Trek 1000 at a garage sale for $500...and we thought that was a deal!

This sounds like a great deal! I do love my 1000. It's been a great bike! I do still ride it a good bit.

I have several friends that ride trek 1000s. If it fits, its a great starter road bike, and at an excellent price. Heck, I know several even moderately experienced riders on them. GO FOR IT, and post pictures!!

I paid $500 in March for my 2006 Trek 1000 WSD. I think that's a good deal on that bike. You should be very happy with it.

I GOT IT!!!! It was bike love at first site. Even after she threw me onto the ground (ooops, not used to pedal straps) and bruising my hand and wrist, I was still in love.

I have never seen a "used" bike that was so unused. The chain and everything is so shiny, it doesn't look like it's had any dust on it. I believe she did only ride it once and that must have been the test drive off the showroom floor. It is perfect. I love it!!!

    HAPPY DANCE!!!
