Dumb fall from my bike

OK, I have been cycling for awhile with clipless pedals, so I've taken a few spills here and there. What I didn't think I'd do was fall when I was just about to come to a complete stop. I unclip my left in anticipation and coast to a stop and lower my foot to come into contact with the pavement.
So with my road shoes on that has little tread, I did a chinese split. The top tube of my bike hits the left thigh and as I'm falling, my girlie parts hit the top tube and I see stars. I ended up on the ground in a funky split of sorts, cursing gravity.
I have since shelved those ice skates and I am now outfitted with MTB shoes.
Anyone have any tips for me on how to use road shoes?

Actually after 10+ years of riding in road shoes, I am packing it in and switching to mtn bike shoes. They're easier to walk in and not quite as slippery.
The only advice I can give is if you have road shoes with no tread (my current road shoes with Looks have a bit of tread on the toe and the heel so it makes it easier) be Very Careful!!!
Scary stuff there and yes, I have done the girly bit seeing stars thing before

when i first started thinking about bike shoes i bought a pair of road shoes. I only had to slip once before I retired them. I guess they're good for races; but for us real life people who ride bikes and occasionally have to walk, they are treacherous. Actually, most of the people i ride with wear MTB shoes. and none of them own MTB's!

Boy does that sound familiar. I was talked into a pair of road shoes at my LBS- tried them once and almost did the splits at a stop and now only use them when I am on my trainer. Purchased a great Hybrid shoe on this site -Garneau multi surface shoe and have been very happy and safe with them. I want to grip the road when I stop not slide.

They are Specialized. I happened to have a pair of Specialized MTB shoes for the recumbent so I outfitted it with cleats for my Speedplay Frogs. I really like walking in recessed cleats anyway so it's not biggie. I just wonder how people handle those road shoes when they are getting off their bike. Originally Posted by Trekhawk

I have PI road shoes and I have not had the slippery-ness problem. However, I have Crankbrothers Quattros pedals and the cleats are recessed with a nice plastic/rubber thingie that goes around the outside and sort of serves as tread. I really like my road shoes, but if I didn't have the Crankbrothers cleats, I bet you anything I'd be ice skating all over town!
Knock on wood, I am yet to crash down on my top tube...although I'll probably do it tomorrow since I just typed that. That sounds extremely painful...I hope you're ok, Sundial!

Sara, thanks I'm doing fine. Actually the fall worked in my favor because it produced a nasty bruise on my thigh and the LBS boys gave me a significant discount on the Frogs.
