Since it's been nine months since the "peeve" thread and Silver and I were talking about this last Sunday, so I thought I'd start this thread for fun:

When riding, it makes me mad when...

Silver's peeve was:

When riding, it makes me mad when ... on a 25mph road, a car is an a hurry to pass me when I'm going 21mph! Can't they wait!

I get mad and upset when I see dead animals, like the rare species kind of animals, way off to the side of the road, so not road kill but probably shot dead by farmers from their pickup trucks. I am referring to animals like an all-black cougar, large bobcat and so on. I can't see that kind of thing from a car, but I sure can from my bike, and it is real upsetting.

Mine would be along the same lines...while I am booking it down the road, taking the lane as I should as I come up to a four-way stop, why does some yahoo have to haul azz around me and squeak back into the lane just before the stop sign, causing both of us to hit the brakes a might harder than if said yahoo would have patiently waited until I got up to the sign? Is it that important to get around the cyclist?

My latest pet peeve is when non-riders complain about sharing the road and say things like "bikers should just get off the road!" I rode my bike to work on Tuesday for the first time. So I walk in the door decked out in all my cycling gear, feeling all proud of myself for making it there on time (and in one piece!) and one of my co-workers starts in on how she hates it when she has to slow down for cyclists, they're in her way, they are a hazard to her, what right do they have to ride on the roads around here, why are they riding out in the lane, etc., etc. I was getting rather defensive, and I finally told her she should hop on a bike and get out there herself. Her attitude would change in about 5 minutes!

sara I had the same thing happen one day- one of the guys at work was complaining about having to slow down for a biker on his drive home last night- and after we talked for a while, I realized it was me that he had been following! Best part is that i'm his boss, and the more we joked about it, the more he got to hear about why bikers SHOULD use the road to ride-
I think he now has a much better understanding and patience level for bikers-

My big peeve (at the moment) are the bikers who completely ignore the rules of the road, and cut off cars. (I live in a big college town, and sometimes the riders are a bit oblivious of EVERYONE else on the road)
I was following behind a car going through an intersection yesterday and another biker not really paying attention was going through the crosswalk against the light, and cut off the car, causing the driver, to curse, brake hard, and swerve- thankfully i saw it coming, and was able to stay out of the way. That's the type of thing that makes drivers think bikes shouldn't be allowed on the road-

It makes me mad that the drinking and driving crowd (which appears to be quite large in this area) thinks it's a good idea to dispose of their empty bottles (usually MGD) in the bike lane . Two MGD flats in a month!

Ditto - and then there are the yahoos who pass us and then brake & turn into a driveway (or onto a side street), causing us to have to slam on our brakes to avoid rear-ending them!

2. Drivers who find it amusing to lay on the horn as they drive by with the intent of scaring us... (pretty freakin effective unfortunately) and then laughing in their rearview mirrors

Fast cyclists who you don't hear coming up behind you who just pass you in zooming close proximity without saying anything or giving you warning that they are coming up behind you on the road. They give me a heart attack, they're lucky I don't swerve for some reason right as they are passing since I don't know they're there, and I just think it's pretty rude not to let people know you are coming up behind them and are about to pass you fast. Is it too much trouble to call out "Good morning!" as you are approaching behind someone?
