My thoughts exactly. Your toes actually keep one another warm. S'pose it's all about the delta between body heat generated and environmental temp. Someone clever-er than me will have to do this calculation.
Also I grew up in my Grandma's hand-knitted (2 ply) woollen socks (short for summer and knee length for winter) so I would never find toed socks as comfortable. I don't find *any* socks as comfortable.
