Trek 5000?

I'm close to picking up a Trek 5000 wsd at my LBS, and I'm nervous I just want to know that I'm making the right decision. I like the way it felt on my little ride, and my next one, and my next one... But this is my first real road bike, definetly my first carbon bike, and I'm afraid of the carbon cracking or whatever it does on a fall. Does anyone have this bike? love it, hate it? Thanks all.

Have it, love it. I got one in April of this year and just cracked 600 miles.

The components are great (105/Ultegra), and anytime you can find a carbon bike for less than $2K I think it's fantastic. I know it's not Trek's OCLV carbon, but it rides like a dream nonetheless.

And my brothers in law have taken to taunting me with the nickname "light bike" (because I fly past them!).

And yes, carbon does have certain risks, but as you probably know, they make airplanes out of the stuff.

My Roubaix is carbon, and Northstar, your comment about your brothers-in-law teasing you reminds me that I keep telling DH that my bike weighs air!

Black Beauty is carbon and I do have a tendency to abuse the poor girl, but she takes it like a champ. I ride rough country roads, have fallen, hit potholes, etc.

What kind of warranty does that Trek have on the frame?

I'm confused. I have a Trek 5000 WSD (2 years old) and it's OCLV carbon.
Did they change something? Come to think of it, the price did go down the last time I checked... I just thought I got a bad deal.
Anyway rachelroo, I was in love at first ride, and haven't fallen out of love since. But, if it comes with the evil Bontrager saddle, GET RID OF IT QUICK!

I test rode this bike when my bf was looking for a new bike (I got to help. It was fun !). He settled on the Madone 5.2, but the 5000/5200 (?) is definitely a very nice bike. Very comfortable and handles beautifully. The carbon is a bit less lively than the Madone's carbon, but it is perhaps more dampening.

I'd be thrilled to get one of these though!!! I think it's a great pick.

I love my carbon bike. I have the Madone, not the 5000, but I'm sure the feel is somewhat the same.

I've put on over 1200 miles since I got it at the end of April, and my body is loving it. I am so much more comfortable on this bike.

There are alot of parkway roads around here that have way too many unavoidable potholes. Everything on the bike is holding up just fine. I'm more careful how I lean it against things because of the special paint job, but other than that I don't baby it.

I'm looking forward to many happy miles on my Trek.

I wouldn't worry too much about carbon if you hit the ground. My boyfriend had an aluminum Trek 1200... and demolished it in one wreck. The frame was NOT saveable. It bent in two.

Get the bike you want... if you have a wreck... you will probably have to replace something or the entire bike, no matter what the frame is made of.

I hear you, sister! WHY DO THEY DO THAT?
I replaced mine with a Terry Falcon X, they must have made that Terry with my butt as a mold.

Trekie, I think the 5000's were OCLV up through 2005. So, you probably got the last of that generation.

I also should add that I must have an exceptional rear end...I've had no trouble with the Bontrager saddle. Weird, huh? Give the seat a try and if you hate it, ditch it! But I haven't had to yet!

note from your local airplane building friend; the new airplanes have METAL frames.
the carbon fiber is not weight bearing.

Hey Rachelroo -

Michelle from Florida here. I am shopping for a WSD road bike. I have a TREK 7.2 FX WSD hybrid but am training (like you) for a TNT Century Ride. I have been told that a road bike will increase my performance tremendously. I looked at the WSD bike article on this web site and have been researching Cannondale, Bianchi, Giant, Specialized, and of course TREK. I am orginally from WI and a big fan of TREK, but want the best bike for my money. I see your original post was from May. Did you get the 5000? What do you think? Many thanks for your input and GOOD LUCK in HI!
