I grew up in Holland, and yes, bikes are part of everyday transportation. I have fond memories of the freedom & independence it gave us kids (as well as not-so-fond memories of biking through the rain & wind, and sitting through half the schoolday in wet jeans..).
But keep in mind that much of the country is very densely populated (16.3 million people in 16,485 sq miles), and the places we had to bike to tended to be much closer together. [I live in Utah where everything is quite spread out.] And Holland is flat! There are certainly areas in the US that lend themselves to increased use of bikes for routine transportation, and we should encourage & support that, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution either.
