We bought a foam mattress pad when I wanted to move back to my queen-size bed with DH from a hospital bed in my living room. I was recovering from pelvic fractures and our ultra-firm mattress was just too darn hard to sleep on my bad side. We bought a 2" foam topper from Target. It called itself memory foam, I think, but it's nothing like Tempurpedic, it's more like regular foam with little slits in it, and it doesn't have any "memory".

Anyway, INSTANT comfort! DH also found that it helped with his joint and back aches and pains, and we have left it on for the past two years. We have a very good mattress set, so it was not that, but we needed something to give it a little "cush", since we went for the extra-firm, no pillow-top mattress when we picked it out a few years back.

    Just my 2 cents!

Just a heads up on the "sleep number bed." we have one and really like it.
HOWEVER, it developed mold! Inside on the air mattress part and on the foam. The company has acknowledged this problem (just do a Google search) and they very graciously replaced the air mattresses and foam at no cost, including shipping. They told us that this problem wouldn't happen with the new mattresses and foam. BUT, time will tell.
On another bed in the house, I purchased the NOVA foam topper that also has the additional down alternative topper above the foam. I picked it up at Costco which has an excellent return policy. I like it too, but not as well as the air mattress. I just hope the mold problem doesn't return....

I too have a sleep number bed, and love it but I use a memory foam pad on top of it. I think the back relief I get is from the actual bed but the pad makes it feel a little cushier. I also no longer get migranes every day since I got my mattress. I do use a memory foam pillow, I feel like the real benefit of it is that it keeps me from tossing and turning, maybe because it shapes to you rather than moving around, once I've found a good position I usually keep it.

I found this when researching for my back recently. I like the looks of it because of the heat reducing channels and cost compared to the Tempurpedic but I don't have the money right now. Good FAQ section.

Sleep Number beds are cool - I tried one when I stayed at a Radisson Hotel.
I have a friend who has said the same thing about her bed. It is a bit warm. When they first got this bed I took a run and jump on it.....ouch! It is very hard when you first hit it. But my friend says she thinks it's ok where her husband loves it.

I, too, just came home from the hospital a few weeks ago after pelvic fractures, and found my mattress (which is a good one, with a pillow top) still too firm for me to be able to sleep. I followed Emily in NC's lead, and got a memory foam topper & it made all the difference. I love it! I got (I think) a great deal from Overstock.com. It took less than a week to get here - and came with two pillows!

It wasn't so expensive, that if I hated it, I'd be out a lot of money, and even if it wasn't thick enough - at 2" - I could simply cut and double it!

(Oh, and shipping is only $1 right now!)

Hmmm... I'm also in the market (it is one of the things I said I would get when I sold my car ) ... any good experiences out there besides sleep number? (I dunno, I'm so programmed *not* to buy something I've seen TV blather about...)
