once the bike's outside you might as well ride a little, right?

Is there a problem getting the bike to the shop? Maybe somebody from the shop can come pick it up.

Then the bike's at the shop, you're hanging out and you meet a potential new riding partner.

and everyone lives happily ever after

I could not help but get a little chuckle with the irony of it all...because of a tire you are now dealing with another tire around the waste

One thing that helps motivate me is to have a tangible goal, such as a specific ride, to prepare for.

Why not start training for a ride in a few months time? Like maybe Bike Against the Odds in mid-September?


Also, what & where is this new cafe/bike shop of which you speak?

Over the long term, the only way to keep up with an exercise program is to find something you like to do. If you enjoy riding, you'll do it because it's fun. If you don't much enjoy riding, it's easy to find excuses not to do it.

Do you enjoy it? Then pump some air into that tire (in fact, check the pressure in both tires--they do lose air and need to be topped off regularly) and go for a spin around the block. If it goes flat, you won't have far to walk to get home. If it holds pressure, then you can venture farther.

If, ultimately, you don't enjoy riding enough to want to do it, then for goodness' sake, don't feel guilty about it. Try something else instead. Biking should be fun, not a chore.

Well, I'm back in the saddle! I kept thinking about the one piece of advice that I read about just thinking about it like you'll just go out for ten minutes - then when you're out there, 10 minutes just ain't enough! Then again, I also had a mountain of homework staring at me. So at a 5:48, sunday night I jumped on the bike, - thru golden gate park, then along the coast, (wind-YIKES!), then 22 miles later, at 7:37 - I was home. But no homework got done that night - OOPS!
