Bah. I'm tons of fun, but I'm also incredibly lazy. I'll tell you what... If you set up my tent and do all of my cooking and cleaning up, I'd love to do a multi-day camping ride of the C&O!

If you want real fun on the towpath, though, let's head out to Paw Paw and take our bikes through the 1/2 mile-long, pitch-black tunnel. That's nifty! The flash from the camera belies how long and dark the tunnel really is. The second photo is an older one, looking in the opposite direction down the towpath from the tunnel.

"How about if we all just try to follow these very simple rules of the road? Drive like the person ahead on the bike is your son/daughter. Ride like the cars are ambulances carrying your loved ones to the emergency room. This should cover everything, unless you are a complete sociopath."

How are you feeling today, dingster? Any of the aches receding yet?

    Ohh so beautiful... so tranquail.

I really need to move out from big cities. Been saying that since the 70's (lived & worked in NYC) then So. Calif (LA, OC, San Diego)... I hope to do so before I get too old and placed in a nursing home.

    All the beautiful photos.

Smilingcat, that's exactly what I love about the C&O Canal Nat'l Historic Park and it's towpath. The old canal runs parallel to the Potomac River for 184.5 miles from the edge of Washington, D.C., all the way to Cumberland in western Md. Scenery and tranquility such as in those photos can be had within a handful of miles from the chaos of downtown D.C.. Though I personally prefer to head even farther away.

It always makes me happy to hear when people discover how great it is, as dingster did yesterday

Now that I know, I want to go. A little far for me though!
