Chain rub on a triple - to be expected?

Today my friend and I rode up Iron Mountain Rd. near Pollock Pines. Talk about needing your granny gears!!!

Based on the info and advice in this thread, today I tried changing chain rings more often to avoid cross chaining, and it worked great. I probably switched rings 8-10 times and didn't drop the chain once. Much better. Less noise and chain rub, and better gearing performance in general.

You're right...no snow this year at all! Very beautiful up there today...but very dry already.

That's Yellow. She lived in Placerville before moving to Utah. I'm in the red jersey. SadieKate is the other chick. The really tall guy is Bubba, SK's honey. The other guy is Ed, who also lives up there. My honey took the photo. He was doing SAG for us since he had broken his arm mountain biking on Tam.

It's a great picture! Ed looks a little familiar to me...I'll look for him on the Placerville Bike Shop rides. I have not met Yellow, but evidently she used to ride practically right past my house. Too bad I wasn't riding back then!

If you guys ever plan to do that ride again, count me in. Even though I didn't make it all the way today, I bet I'd be able to do it in another month or so.

My Specialized Allez Elite was converted from a triple to a double when I bought it. Since then my LBS has looked at it a few times but can't manage to get rid of the rub when I'm in smaller front ring and smalls in the back... I get incredible rub that no amount of shifting or partial shifting can get rid of, consistent through 4 or so gears. The guys don't seem concerned, but they cater to racers on Pinarellos who laugh at my Ultegras.

Tell me that the rub *can* be tuned away?
