Ditto that. If an instructor is asking you to do something that just feels "wrong" to your body, then don't do it or modify it in some way. I have an instructor who likes us to spin really fast at a high resistance level. I totally disregard that instruction because I'd like to keep my knees happy and healthy. In my experience, most instructors don't build in enough "recovery" after a hard effort, so I often add my own. It helps to use an HRM for this though. Also, I would suggest talking to your instructor if there's something he or she is asking you to do that doesn't make sense. They might welcome the feedback.
