Had you had a hot toddy around the same time, or a bit before you took the meds with codine? If so, the numbness etc. (not sure about the vomiting) is likely related to mixing the codine with alcohol....there is a reason they tell you not to drink alcohol when taking codine... and yah, I know this one from experience Took a cough medicine with codine a couple of hours before taking some Nyquil (which has alcohol in it) when nothing would stop a caugh....had that numb and dissoriented feeling. That was the only time it happened with taking a medication with codine, so was defenately from mixing it with alcohol.

If this was the case, you might be fine JUST taking the cough medicine.

    Er

Zen-The ER was pretty quiet & the DR seemed to treat me like someone who didn't have much to worry about..
I'll make an appt with my dr as i'd planned.

PA-I didn't have a hot toddy yesterday, just tea. Oddly enough I had one ready but didn't take a sip.

Some people do not react well to codeine at all. My dentist gave me some once for a tooth infection I had bad pain with- after one dose i felt so AWFUL, like I wanted to just die! So ill, dizzy and nauseous- sick all over, shaking, terribly drugged, and my heart was racing too. I probably "should" have gone to the emergency clinic, but I didn't want to move....I curled up in bed and toughed it out until it wore off about 8 hours later, but I never ever want to take codeine again.

    dr

I went to my dr this afternoon & we discussed what happened. Oddly enough i've had codeine before in Nurofen plus but with no side effects. We're not sure if it was just the codeine or one of the additives in the cough syrup but I can assure you I won't be taking Rykodene again!

We discussed the cough etc & gave me a prescription for something with Roxithromycin. HOpefully this kills the cough!

Thank you for your support ladies. It's nice to have you in my life!

Ah! Sorry ladies. I should have made that clearer.

NEVER mix alcohol with medication. Bad combination. I seldom take medication for anything (strongest the odd aspirin usually for headaches) as I've found that most of the "cold and flu remedies" are a waste of money. Over here most of them contain paracetamol which I've found to be totally useless for me.

Also, don't overdo the Whisky Toddies. I did once. Had a stinking, chesty cold. Took one Toddy, decided I felt a lot better, so had another...and another...by the time I got half way through the fourth one, I was decidedly wobbly-legged and ready to party "C'mon Germs. Let's Party!!! ) I had an evil hangover the next day, but by teatime I was fine and the cold had gone. Definitely wouldn't recommend doing that though.

On a more serious note though, it does seem strange that only the left-hand side was affected. I would have thought a bad reaction to codeine would have affected all of you. Scary

    Goodness Cheryl!!!

    HOLY SMOKES!!!
You scared the jeepers out of me!! WOW- very scary!
But I'm a lot like you. I hate taking stuff. I would rather let nature do it's thing. I'm also allergic to a lot of meds- esp. antibiotics so I'm a bit gun shy when it comes to taking stuff.
People tease me because when I go to the dentist for a procedure that requires novicaine I have to have someone pick me up. I become disorriented and loopy. I certainly wouldn't want to drive afterwards!
Anyhoo, hope you are on the mend. I have quite a box of goodies ready to send you!
