Had a great run today. The remnants of that wind storm that came through the last couple of days left cool temps this morning. And it's a good thing because I overslept and got out late.
    So far this week

Sunday: Run 10 miles in am- throw back out while cooling off in the pool afterwards..

Monday: Run 5 miles in pm to test back. All was ok as long as I stayed on flat ground. Slow effort- aver 10:54 min miles

Tuesday: Run 8 miles- due to wind it was on the treadmill and dreadfully slow at an average 11 min mi. I just don't feel it on the mill...

Wednesday; Swim 2000 mtrs- see the swimming w/ the fishes thread. Wanted to ride in pm but the wind was sustained at 20+ mph. I just can't/wont do that after IMAZ..

Thursday: Run 7 miles. Great run, weather was great, averaged 10:34 min miles. Then grabbed son and played tennis for an hour. Plan to ride tonight. I miss my bike..

And KSH, is your sprint tri this weekend?
Oh yea, it is. Thanks for asking.

It's a total "C" race for me... so there will be no tapering for it. Thus, I'm not making a big deal of it. Just going to get out there and do whatever I can do.

My main focus is my Oly in July and then my HIM in October. Anything else I do is just for fun (2 sprints and the Hotter N Hell bike rally).

Hey... Running Mommy... are you training for another marathon? Dang, those are some serious miles for just some casual training/running.

Otherwise, please take note that you are faster than me and you would kick my butt running.

Been busy at work so not really had time to post.

An update: did my impromptu trail run last Friday and I loved it, absolutely loved it. I did some of the trails I normally ride on my bike but in the reverse direction - now I know why I fly along them on my bike, its all downhill, or uphill in the direction I was running . I also learned that you carry no momentum from a downhill into an uphill when running (ha ha, that flummoxed my legs). I did 4.5 miles of very undulating terrain, either up or down, lost of short and steep sections, no flat which is a complete change form what I'm used to. As it wasn't planned I wore my road shoes, they coped ok as it was so dry but I nearly went over on my ankle once so I'll be wearing my trail shoes today.

I did my hillwalk on the Saturday, ribs were fine, felt a slight niggle from my hips and quads from the run but nothing major. Glorious sunshine and clear blue sky when I left Lancashire, when we got to Snowdonia low cloud and strong winds. The climb all the way up Mount Snowdon was in thick clag, visibility was really, really spookily poor in places but we were doing the "tourist" path so it was motorway wide and easy to follow. Could see sod all when we got to the top so had a quick bite to eat then back down. There were the usual hordes on the summit even though the weather wasn't great. If you don't know (why would you) Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and has a mountain railway line that can take you all the way to the summit (not that day though) so after slogging your way all the way up seeing hardly anyone you top out and there is a swarm of inappropriately dressed people (stilletto heels, mini skirts etc) already at the top talking loudly into mobile phones. The walk was 10 miles in total and just over 3000ft of ascent but not challenging terrain wise and I kept wishing I wasn't wearing my full on walking boots as it felt like I had a couple of anvils strapped to my feet.

Ran 7.2 miles on Tuesday at lunchtime in the heat (about 22C here) doing 6 2 minute intervals in the middle. The intervals were hard due to the heat and I think I boiled myself as I felt out of sorts all afternoon. When I set off my knee was hurting but it seemed to go away, however on Wednesday my hip was hurting and yesterday I decided not to run. Its a little niggly today but a yoga session last night helped so I'm going to chance an offroad run again tonight. I think all the downhill running I did last Friday has upset my body somewhat as I haven't quite mastered the technique for steep downhill running, I try to brake too much which really stresses the quads. Which reminds me, stretch time.

    My Hammies!

Monday when I did my sprint/jump rope combo I must have done some damage to my hamstrings. They have been tight and sore all week long. Cycling and swimming has been okay. Last night I tried to do a run after my OWS--ouch! I actually had tears in my eyes because my legs hurt so bad. I ended up walking for 45 minutes instead and limped the rest of the night. I took 3 advil and am feeling a little better today. I guess I'll have to take some time off.

    Yowzer!!!!

    Feelin' hot, hot, hot!!!!

Did a big brick today and lordy it was stinkin' hot and humid. We did an hour of hard single track and then I got off and ran for 52 mins. Probably around 5.5 miles, Hard to tell cuz the terrain was rough, but the DH said I was moving along pretty good. My little quaddies were screeching at the end, but I did it!

whew, glad that sucker is done.

Join the club! I went for my second trail run this evening, I was intending to do a little more than last Friday's 4.5 miles, aiming for 6. I had my trail shoes on ( the low profile heel was so much more confidence inspiring though the relative lack of cushioning showed a few times) so no footpod to tell me how fast I was going and no Ipod either. Decided to approach the hills based on effort rather than pace and this seemed to work, felt much better running than last week so decided just to explore a bit. Ended up being out a lot longer than I originally thought but I just had the most fantastic run, beautiful evening, generally easy conditions underfoot if a little hard and rocky sometimes. When I got home I measured my route on the map: 10.3 miles with 1400ft of ascent!!!!! Chuffed, its not massive amounts of ascent by Yellow's standard but its 1400ft more than I would normally do in a run

More to the point its 1400ft of descending, some I would almost describe as "technical" as I had to pick a line to run. I'm so going to pay for it tomorrow. Time was 1:40 but I think I lost a few minutes with watch faff but I don't care its probably my most enjoyable run to date and second longest to boot.

    Gosh Tattie,

Don't you LOVE it...I will change my tune when I get up tomorrow and my quads are fried, but I love trail running.

    I know

Its the reason I love mountain biking and hillwalking so much as well. Just being out on the hills away from tarmac and traffic, love it. I've now got even more reasons to head out on the trails. Lunchtime road runs are going to seem so boring now.

    Welcome to the dark side.

Just the thought of running on pavement makes me cringe.

Today was a dream! Started by riding my bike to work - 60 degrees, a little breezy but not bad. It's a little over four miles mostly on neighborhood streets and through a park by the river, and the last half mile or so is near downtown but still not too bad.

When I came home it was in the mid 70's with practically no wind. I was due for 2 miles of tempo running this evening - plus some warm-up and cool-down jogs - what the heck, go for a brick! After getting home and quickly parking the bike in the garage/dropping my backpack, I headed off for a 2-mile run. At the end of the first mile, after my quads had stopped making their presence quite so obvious - ten minutes! I've been in the 11-minute mile range forever. I walked a couple of times on the way back 'cause I was feeling a little dehydrated - didn't take a bottle on the bike for such a short ride, and should've gotten a quick drink between the ride and run.

It was kind of funny running in my baggy jean shorts and t-shirt and untied flailing hair. I must have looked like some kind of maniac because people were staring at me like "Are you o.k.?" Cars didn't crowd me while I was running, either.

Anyway, my first brick felt great. Love that endorphin-induced euphoria!

Going to have to do it though, at least in a perverse way I enjoy intervals. I woke up this morning and my calves and quads are fine, my hip on the other hand May have to see my chiro a bit earlier than planned.

It was hot today! Ended up doing 4 miles, but barely dragged my butt in, and it was pretty slow for us, averaging about 10 min/mile in the end (the last two miles were noticeably slower than the first)

I did my first 5k race this morning! A women's only run with all proceeds going to the local women's shelter. Got up at 6 am, had a light breakfast and headed out to register by 7:30 am. Had Jesse and Erik along to take pics and cheer me on. There were about 250 women there, some walking 5k, some running 5k or 10k. The results haven't been posted yet so I don't really know how I did in relation to everyone else but I did great for me! My best 5k time so far is 29:34 and my goal was to do 29:30-30:00. I pushed hard and did it in 26:45!!! Woo-hoo!! I did not place in the top 3 for my age range but I think there were only about 20 women ahead of me in the 5k so I am VERY happy. My legs cramped up when I finished for the first time ever. I was in zone 5 HR for 23 minutes and I hit a new maximum HR of 193. Who knew? Thought I'd better slow down a little at that point. Anyway, my first race was a success! What a rush!

Ouch - my poor, poor feet!

Okay, so I'm never ready for a 25k trail race this early in the season, but what's a little pain the next day? Unfortunately, my feet took a real beating this time - I've been getting blisters on my left arch all season, in longer runs, but I thought I had that worked out. Not so. Plus both feet hurt quite a bit after the race - I looked later, and both arches are actually swollen and lumpy looking along the inside edge. Very weird. They don't hurt as bad today, and look less swollen, but I'm a little concerned. Maybe I need different shoes? I have fairly high arches, so maybe I need more support, but then maybe the blisters would be even worse? I hate to scrap a pretty new pair of trail shoes. And we don't really have many options for shopping around and trying on a bunch (did that when I got these, on a trip to Appleton).

All in all it went well. Slower than the first two times I did this race (2:28:43), but not that far off. I was running with my friend for the first 15k or so, and then headed out alone to find my "zone" - I think it's easier sometimes to run a little faster if that pace feels more natural. Early on we try to stay together (yeah, it is a race, but that is way too far to really race), and I'm faster on the downhills, so I end up waiting a lot, and she's lighter & faster on the uphills, so I struggle to keep up (so the rests after the downhills come in handy). On the flats I just sorta feel bad for a long time. She's really faster than I am, but is more cautious on the downhills. This course becomes a more gradual downhill trend in the second half, so it's easier to open it up a little, and my extra weight is less of a detriment. I did end up with some alternating upper & lower calf cramping, along with my achilles (is that even possible?). Frequent short walks toward then end, but my longest runs have been two 2-hour trail runs (about 10 miles), so adding about 50% in one fell swoop isn't going to feel good. Anyway, I can barely walk today, so I guess I'll be biking until my feet return to their normal shape and size. My quads are killing me - we came home today, and the 2-1/2 hours in the car helped me seize right up! I just went downstairs to put the laundry in the dryer, and had to go down the stairs backwards.
