my first century !!!

First, and mighty important -- congratulations Luvs2ride! I'm so awed! (by all the centuries that got ridden this past weekend)


And now my little hijack:

Congratulations on what will hopefully be the first of many centuries for you!

I understand the training time involved...I've done three double centuries and ????? centuries this year and the time away from the kids (4.5, 7, 9) is always hard. I'm leaving them for 11 days starting next Monday to crew Race Across America and I'm suddenly feeling huge mommy guilt about it! Most of my goals have been accomplished for the year though and I am going to pull back a little with my cycling during their summer vacation so we can enjoy the beach and the pool!

Brandy -- no guilt needed: you'll be a much better mommy for having had a vacation from your kids doing and thinking only about adult things! "Mommy" is a 24/7 job with no time off for good behavior (it will follow you, of course, as you ride this trip) and often it's in addition to other full time job(s) too. Just like people need a vacation from a "regular" job to recharge their batteries, we mommies need to recharge now and again too! (I just did grandma for four days, and didn't even get private bathroom breaks every time -- if I went to the back bathroom, where I thought I could hide out, I had boys peering in through the glass door! I guess I need a new curtain on that thing after all.)

Congratulations! I love your story about the guys and their aches and pains. When a friend and I rode Tour de Tahoe several years ago now, her hubby and his friend were constantly complaining about upset stomaches, headaches, whatever. At the end of the ride when ran into another couple and the BF started telling us how awful he had felt. I don't think he appreciated it when Jenny and I burst out laughing. Bunch of wussy guys.

Congrats - that was our first century, too, back in 2001. Now I've done 8 double centuries, countless 200ks and centuries, brevets, Death Ride, etc. and DH and I both coach for TNT (currently coaching an elite Death Ride group).

It's all just beginning!

Congrats, Susan!!! So very excited for you!!! I've known many people who've done that ride- and they have said nothing but the best about the scenery and the atmosphere of the ride. I keep wanting to do that ride for TNT, but after we just did fundraising last year for them (Nike San Fran mary), don't want to tap my family and friends too soon!

Congrats on your first century and for raising so much $ for LLS! Do you have pictures of you in your gear and helmet??

Well TriGirl, I am hoping to get my hands on some pictures in the next week. When you say you did Nike San Francisco . . are you talking about the Nike Women's marathon? I did that marathon in 2005 and 2006. It was my first full marathon in 05. Talk about a "girl's weekend!" I know what you mean about taking a break with TNT due to the fundraising. I've fundraised 5 times since 2004 and I am DONE (so are my family and friends by the way!!)

And Bikergal/Shelly, I remember seeing your Shark fins! Do you know where the tomato people were from? There sure were a lot of people on the course with tomatos on their helmets!

Dear Celeste/Joyce, You are an inspiration to me going out there as a leukemia survivor. GOOD Job! I didn't much like the hill at Emerald Bay either but what are you going to do? Better early in the ride then when your leggs are really "cooked!" I also remember those Texas spurs . . GO TEAM !!

Although I've considered myself a runner I'm now a "cycling convert" . . it is so much easier on my aging joints !! I could actually walk after the ride !! (although sitting was a bit more difficult-ha ha) My running friends still say that the bike does all the work for you . . I've invited them to ride with me !!!!!
