I have never been on this trail, but here is the Illinois Department of Natural Resouces website http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt.../R5/tunnel.htm Sounds nice if you have a hybrid or mountain bike - not so much with a road bike.

My family is trying to convince me to coming to southern Illinois for a family reunion this summer - Harrisburg or Vienna area. As I recall, the old railroad that ran by Grandpa's house in Tunnel Hill is now part of a rails-to-trails. So if I was to drive up for the reunion, I was thinking of hauling my bike. Does anyone know about the trail? And would anyone come out and play with me?

Crushed limestone trail. Doable by road bike so if that's what you have don't let it stop you (or, at least, I've done many many miles on the Katy on mine, same surface) but watch for the occasional eroded rough spot. Use dry lube...white gravel dust abounds. The west central IL trails I have done are well kept. I'm too far away from this one to play.![]()
