All right people. I want a report on the Ring of Fire ride!

I was still a bit dazed and confuzed when I saw SK at the finish of the DC so I didn't really get much detail out of her. But from snooping in her journal I hear that some of you are trying out for the CDF's Cycling Fire Fighting squad....

    Details!! I want details!

And yes, I did the Davis double, but there was huge confusion since the course was changed while we were on the route - no one knew what was going on. The bike club did a great job of setting up SAGs out of order, but we had a bit of down time stopped at the end of some road trying to figure out where we were going - there was no way for them to communicate the changes to everyone and a whole groupd of us went one way, turned around, went the other way, turned around. And the route was quite a bit harder, and less pretty. We had a LOT more traffic.

And the only land speed records set were for slowest ever Davis double by the Pois family. Mr. P gets the freakishly strong robot award. And I get the sucky slow rider award. Oh well. At least I didn't crash and separate my collar bone like my friend Mike. He lent me his light at lunch since he wouldn't be needing it and that ensured that we did indeed finish before dark, which was good.

Yesterday was a good lesson in adaptation, I think.

Yeah, y'all got some story tellin' to do.

MP, you also need to explain the "strong robot award". Slow and sucky you will never be, so just stop that right this instant, missy.

I feel so out of the loop.

    "Strong robot."

My husband complains that he doesn't like doing double centuries, and he'd rather ride short (100 or less) and fast. Problem is, then he goes to do a double and he rides long and fast. All freaking day. I just don't get it. I am really impressed at how well he does - and it pushes me to stay with him. And I just can't sit on the wheel all day either, I have to take my pulls even if I don't feel great. But he gets on the front, and we're going the same speed at mile 180 that we were at mile 50.

We actually had a negative split on the ride - the climb of Cobb was in the first half. (We got the bonus double Resurrection climbs because of the course change. Lucky us. ) And even though he left me on the long climbs to go ahead, my ride time was only 1/2 hour more than his.

Wicked bad hot foot on Resurrection. Last 2 doubles I have been plagued by this. I got to the rest stop and gave Mike my shoe to have the cleat moved back, which helped a bit.

Sounds like it's time for some new shoes.

That's what solved it for me anyway.

I have new shoes. That may be the problem - but I think it was the cleat moving I did after my bike fit. I will try the old positioning (farther back) on our super long team ride and see how it goes. if it doesn't work, it's back to the old shoes for the Death Ride.

    Ring of Fire

More like "Wall o' Flames". Unfortunately our Designated Photographer did not do her job, and we have no proof of the surreal landscape we rode through, thus you'll have to believe everything we say. It was touch and go, flames licking at our wheels. WrenchBoy's handlebar tape starting to melt. Singed clothing.

    Or not.

    Lessee.

We rode to the mouth of the Canyon at Lake Solano where the road was closed due to a fire. We heard something about the Davis Double and "backward." So we decided to ride our loop back wards up to Moskowite (yellow, same loop and direction we rode on the Foxy Fall day) and make the decision there. If the road was open, we'd continue and if the road was closed, we'd go back down to Fairfield and take the train home.

We got to the intersection of 121/128 (just above the Wooden Valley School rest stop) and Lee was looking like he was going to gack on the spot. Asthma wheezing and rasping you could hear from 50 ft away. Kim and Bill had already headed for Mosokowite so we sent Jobob after them to take their chances and I hauled Trek and Lee back to Fairfield. I deposited them at Coffee World where having had milkshakes on the morning stop there, they decided to lollygag in the shade with Italian Sodas while I rode a 25 mile time trial back to Winters to get the car (cause I decided I wanted to see if I could beat Bill, Jo and Kim on their route).

Meanwhile, Bill, Jo and Kim decided to ride on. They'll have to give you the details but there was no CHP officer at the road block up top and the CalTrains employee said "No highway patrolman here to say you can't and I don't know if there is one farther down the road who will send you back, but you can try." So off the three Darwin Award Candidates went. Their story from here on out so they'll have to supply the details of the dread and terror, the descent and return from Hades, the close call with the snake, etc.

Let it be said that I arrived in Winters only a few minutes behind them. OK, OK, they had lots of sightseeing and people to talk to on the way , such as the fire captain who said "Well, I don't see any highway patrolman here so be careful." Bill thinks he thought they were loons.

Meanwhile, the Davis Double was re-routed to do the last half as an out and back. A few folks had started before the official time and got out in front of the officials and so got to ride an extra 40 miles to get back on course.
