He either got a glancing blow - which granted, a glancing blow from a truck can be pretty intense - or the truck bounced over a curb and rode over his head. Regardless, no styrofoam and plastic helmet is going to hold up under a truck. There is too much squishy stuff underneath (i.e., his head) for that to happen.
That is not to say, of course, that the story wouldn't have had a radically different ending if he weren't wearing his helmet, and he's danged lucky. So, yeah, always wear your helmet.

I heard on another forum that it was a glancing blow.

I always wear a helmet (and I insist my son wears one too). The memories of when I was 6 years old (44 years ago) and severely bashed my head are still quite vivid.

Someone on another thread wrote "Better to look like a mushroom than end up a vegetable". How true!

I see people ride their bikes without helmets in traffic all of the time and it just makes me shudder . I fell once on a wooden bridge (hard enough to knock my brake and gear levers out of adjustment and bend my rear derallieur) and if it weren't for my brain protector, I would've really hurt my precious noggin!! Please please please everyone wear your helmets, no matter how "funny" you think you look.

    Shee-yi - it!
    Another helmet-disciple here.
Despite 1000's of wind-in-the-hair miles touring and messengering in the 70's and early 80's. Started wearing one several years ago and had a crash last year that would have ended up much worse if it wasn't for the helmet.

Just think how "funny" you'd look with your head shaved and bandaged.
Or worse.....(I'll leave that to your imagination)

I saw a pic of the helmet today while I was eating lunch. It certainly looks live it was run OVER.
