oh, I forgot about shorts with NO gripper, what a good idea.

I have a pair of Descente bliss shorts (TE sells them), shorter inseam with no gripper, and they're quite comfy esp. in the heat, and -- and not too expensive either.

+ The chamois is very comfortable.
