Yeah. Suddenly it goes reeeeeaaaaallly sloooooow.
Also, some of these players are super-competitive. As in know the official scrabble word lists by heart. There are "words" on the list that don't exist, and words that do but aren't on the list. I just had a game with somebody named something-granny who didn't respond when I offered not to challenge her word (not in my unabridged) if she'd accept another (quite common but not on the scrabble list) which would open up the rest of the board for us (we'd blocked ourselves out from about half). She didn't respond until I put down my word ... then she challenged it. Geez! Not very sociable! She was gonna win anyway. She was like 100 points ahead with only 2 tiles left.
Oh well. I just won't play with her again.
Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.
I think I am going to go to the scrabulous site for a while. For some reason the other site, the atari site really messes with my computer. http://www.scrabulous.com/index.php you can look for me there. my name there is branwine. You can have timed games but you can set it up for as much time as you want.

You play with NO Board.
You lay out all pieces in the center of your group. Everyone draws seven letters and waits.
You turn them over at the same time and make an individual puzzle, just your own, always keeping seven letters in your queue. So, if you start with seven and lay out a four letter word, you then draw four more and so on.
All the players are doing this simultaneously - making their own puzzles.
When someone draws the last letter, they announce it to the group, but everyone continues until the first person uses all their letters in their puzzle. They announce they're complete and then everyone else stops immediately.
The winner then has to read out all the words. If someone challenges a word, everything comes off until valid words (so if it's in the middle of the puzzle, it's a serious problem) and everyone's play continues until someone goes out.
You score it using the numbers on the tiles. If a letter is used twice (vertically and horizontally), then it counts twice. Simple. The person who goes out gets a fifty point bonus for the round...the others get points off for the unplayed letters.
This is scrabble with a rapid heart rate. Try it, you'll love it!

I just came from a camping trip that would have been fun!
