I love my LBS! www.recycledcycles.com
Flossie had a double 48t-39t. Well, I'm a wimp on the hills and needed lower gears. Paul at Recycled Cycles kept an eye out for a set of cranks that would fit me (175mm) Flossie (square bolt) and a compact double set of rings (110 bcd) A set of Suntour XC Pros came in, and he grabbed them and called me.
The Suntour XCs came with 46t and 36t. He advised me to save my $$ and keep the 46t, change up to a 48t or 50t if I felt I needed it later. I got the smallest chainring that will fit for the inner, a Salsa 34t.
Paul also switched out the derailleur for one that would handle the jump smoother.
So now I have a 46t-34t compact double and was able to keep everything compatible with my Campy Athena and my 8 speed cogs and chain.
All for $49.01!!! (labor included)
(And once again, I got oohs and aaahs from people in the bike shop. She's so pretty!)
I need to take my LBS some beer!

That's great!! What a deal. Was the crankset new or used? I thought that Suntour didn't exist any more.

Sometimes you can find new old stock Suntour for sale if you look hard.
My DH is thinking of putting one on my ramb so I can get a one gear wider range in each direction.
Knot, I can't believe that's all you paid!!! Yeah get those boys some GOOD beer! Report back on the new hill climbing abilities.

Used! The chainrings had hardly any wear. Used Suntour derailleur, too.
The only new thing in the bunch was the Salsa 34t.
I'm thinking I wanna replace the 46t (which is painted black) with a pretty silver 48t. They had a used silver 46t that they were willing to switch out for me, but I wasn't gonna switch just for looks without changing tooth count, too. I was pretty happy with my 48t I had on my old double, so if I decide to get a 48t I'll have them order me a silver one. Ramped if I can get it.
(they didn't have a used silver 48t, or I'd've grabbed it.)
The painted ring just doesn't look quite as "classic" as the silver. Yes, I'm shallow, I know....

What a great deal! ENJOY!!! But if you are considering replacing the top ring why not get a 50 since you can (compact doubles let you have a 16 tooth range), and a 50 is nice for the flats. If you noticed the diff. between a 46 and 48, I'll bet you'll like the 50 even more. I don't think you'll lose anything on the low end, since those gears tend to overlap anyway.
uh, Knot, I noticed that you did not respond to my challenge?
Mimi - I have SKnot this weekend, and Trek will be here next weekend, then I have SKnot the weekend after... so I don't know what weekend I could plan a ride yet.
But I will!
I have a bike for Trek, (it's a Trek!) so we'll be doing some riding while she's here. If we have time.![]()

Great! we don't have to do Mt St Helens, but there are lots of smaller hills to challenge us around here. Where'd you get the trek from ?
I should say; tell us the story of yourr new acquisition, a Trek for Trek?
It's from Recycled Cycles, it's SKnot's old bike. He's outgrown it, and it should fit Trek just fine.

Congrats
My EMC has a compact double and it does everything I need.
Fast up a hill for me is about 10-11kph, and the only way that will improve is me dropping weight.
Enjoy... compact doubles work very well - at least thats my experience![]()
Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
"I will try again tomorrow".
Beer for my guys...
I bought a six-pack of Red Hook ESB for my guys at the LBS, which I will take to them this weekend.
I luuuuuuv my LBS!

rode up a little hill near me that is part of my commute. wow! What a difference with the compact double! I didn't even need the lowest available gear!
Next: Angina Alley on my commute from work, then the hill I've only ridden up once (had to walk all the other times).
This compact double stuff is pretty nifty!
