    Test Rode Two Bikes Today

First of all can I just say how much I LOVE riding a road bike??? Today was my first time ever. Going from a 30 pound mountain bike to these lightweight carbons . . . need I say more? I'm in love.

Well, today I test rode a Cannondale Synapse Feminine Carbon 2 and a Specialized Ruby Expert (both triples). I was a bit disappointed in that I drove about 25 miles to this bike shop, they knew I was coming, and they barely spent any time with me. No measurements, just had me do the standover test. The only adjustment they made was to the seat. I brought my shoes, but they just had me use the platform pedals already on the floor models. I was able to ride each around the parking lot. The wind was gusting like crazy. Anyway, WOW! Both bikes are so smooth. I really couldn't tell much of a difference in handling, but it seemed as though the Ruby might have had me in a bit more of an upright position. I hated the saddle (Body Geometry Jett Women's - I had my chamois shorts on too, but that saddle just hurt!). Other than that, there was something just a tad more comfie on the Ruby. Too close to call, really. So, I think the thing that is going to tip me over to the Ruby is the price. If I do go with it, I'll be purchasing it at a LBS that is running a 12% off sale early next month. That combined with the fact that the Ruby is less expensive to begin with and I'll save over $700. Not a small chunk of change! Of course, I'll have them swap out the saddle. I've been happy with the service at the LBS (Bicycles Plus -- got a tune-up, bought my clipless shoes and pedals and fluid trainer there - they were very attentive and patient with my ignorance).

Again, I am so disappointed that this other bike shop didn't take the time to fit me or anything. I was supposed to meet with a particular person, but he ended up not being there. So, maybe it was a short-staffing issue. Whatever. If I'm going to plunk down that kind of money, I want to know that the bike fits perfectly! So, I'll be going to the LBS next weekend and have them fit me to the bike, etc.

Honestly, I was scared that I was going to absolutely love the Cannondale. I had pretty much talked myself into it from reading reviews and specs. I am pleasantly surprised that I like the Ruby just as much.

I was really surprised at how different the sizing is on the two bikes. All the measurements on the 47cm Cannondale are comparable to the 51cm Specialized. Who would have thought that short me would feel comfie on a 51cm? I'm 5'2" if I really stretch.

Anyway, thanks again for all the great information. I feel like I'm buying a house!

Now, if this weather would just cooperate so I could get outside and ride! But, I think it's back on the trainer this afternoon. I did a gusty wind ride a couple weeks back and it was miserable!

If you go with the Ruby give the Jett a chance - its not heavily padded so it might hurt at first, but once my backside got used to it, I've found it to be the most comfortable saddle I've ever had.

michele -- don't you think you should do more riding than that before you plunk down the money? I'm about to start the process, too. Can't wait to see how a road bike feels after my hybrid. But I do intend to make people jump through hoops for my money. Not to be difficult -- but because this time I just want to be SURE!

When I bought my commuter I took it for about 10 miles of test riding, and that was just for a little $400 hybrid.

Will your other shop let you take the Ruby out for more than just a run around the parking lot? You said they'll do a fitting, so I'm betting they'll also send you out for a longer test ride.

Oh, yes. I will be able to take their bikes out for an hour each. I plan to test ride a Trek at that shop as well. Then off to one more shop to test ride a Giant and a Bianchi. After that, I will still need to think about it . . . but, for now, the most expensive one is off my list.

    Thanks for the encouragement.
