I have a road bike and a hybrid, but my son just took my hybrid to college, so it is a good thing I'm mostly a road rider.

I ride road and mountain - have a 2002 Lemond Zurich for road and a Specialized M4 Stumpjumper hardtail and Santa Cruz Superlight for mountain. I divide my time between both passions, although in the last couple of years have been doing more mountain. Just something about the challenge of climbing and descent, the beautiful scenary, possibility of seeing animals and no cars appeals to me.
Re Hybrid: To me those are road comfort bikes. They are OK on bike trails and street but really have no use on most mountain bike trails. Not enough suspension and geometry's all wrong.
Decide on what you'll like to do and then buy the proper bike. There really is no bike built for both activities. My road bike and mountain bikes are night and day from each other - for a reason. If you buyt he hybird you will find yourself limited in what you can do for wither road or mountain.
