when i lived in CT and knew more riders I was able to ask them what their favorite shop was. I went there and learned a TON about my bike, tires, rims, sizes etc. Partly because my hybrid has unusually sized tires and I was wanted to put nubby tires on it. I succeeded but only because of a wonderful, helpful shop employee who gave me a real lesson on what I have, what's available, and what I need. They have these cool books with tons of tire types, brands, sizes etc.
I'd ask a cyclist or cycle club (or both) in your area, for a good shop.
