Sunshine, you are def not lazy. It is much easier to push yourself a bit harder when with others than when training on your own.
Concentrate on what the ride is for;
- if you are doing hill reps then your HR will most likely go up, but the hill reps are about improving power in your legs.
- if you are doing sprint intervals, you HR will def go up because you are focusing on massive but short power bursts
- if you are doing cruise intervals, then your HR will go as high as you can push it for a 2-3 minutes, because these are about increasing your max HR
Remember though, that your training rides shouldn't all be about increasing your HR because that is not effective or sustainable training.
I guess if you want to lift your HR for an entire training ride when on your own, choose yourself a flat 15-25km course and do either an aerobic TT or a TT on it.
But to answer your question, you are def not lazy. That is just the nature of bunch riding - whether racing or training If people go harder, you tend to respond and it is very difficult to emulate when on your own.
Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
"I will try again tomorrow".
Wow, this goes hand-in-hand with what I was asking about in how to start training. I too can push myself when riding with others but when I ride by myself I just can't seem to bring myself to train/push myself. Let me know if you figure something out!
As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence." ~Benjamin Franklin
Like I suggested to Sunshine - you need to make a ride specific and make yourself do it.
Just going out and trying to ride hard won't do it. Riding with even one other person often will, or otherwise set yourself a time, a cadence and gear or a heart rate and try to meet that goal for that ride.
Its a common problem and the best thing to make you ride on a training ride like you do when you ride with others is to keep on riding with others...
Sorry, no magic answer for this one![]()
