The wind in SD probably averages 20 or so. The road bike I bought last summer seems to blow around too much in a crosswind. Mabe my thicker spokes and v-shaped rims contribute to this problem. Anyone have any experience with how rims and spoke can affect handling of a bike.

If I'm peddling forward but am going backwards, it's a sign to park the bike!

The end of winter and through spring here usually gets really windy, gusts up to 30+, especially as the day goes on. Once, I decided to go riding on the road on this beautiful but what I thought was a slightly windy day. There was a pretty tough cross wind and I thought "I can do it, this is nothing" then, I reached down for some water and the wind hit me and off the road I went (well my bike actually) I went the opposite direction, skidding across the pavement. Fortunately, there wasn't any traffic or I would be road pancake I road home slowly with a bruised ego and bloody knees and elbows. Now, I stick to the paths on windy days! Mother nature tought me a thing or 2 that day!
